Noise of transmission normal or bad

Post by syclnjr »

Hey there all. I havn't been on here in awhile and I am noticing that my tranny seems to be making more and more noise. It could all be me thinking that it is louder than usual. Here is the symptoms, usually in gears 1 through 4( can't hear it all that well in 5th or 6th), anyway if you hold the car in gear i.e. lets take the example of taking off from a light you shift from first to second and then you are going to hit another light so you let it sit in second running oh 3-4000 rpm and you slowly let the throttle out to slow down and it sounds like a loud whiring noise or something that would sound like a bad bearing, you push the clutch in and it is gone. this maybe be normal for this tranny but I am not sure. Please take note that I have taken the car back to the dealership three times for the 2-3 syncro not being right. when first starting and letting it warm up like usual, trying to shift from 2-3 you can feel the shifter stopping the gears. This jerk offs at the dealership the last time had the nerve to tell me that it shifted smooth like right off the line. Needless to say I have a little hesitation in taking it it. Question about the tranny though would it be wise to change the fluid to something like Amsoil? Would it help? Oh yeah it is an 04 GT with 16,000 mile on it. Thanks in advance.later

Hey,I have the same thing. sorta... well, there is a whinning noise when trying to downshift BUT still it makes a noticable whirl noise when letting the gear in while slowing. I'm not so concerned with this noise, I'm more concerned with what seems to be a scrape sound as the car slows in 2nd gear, like a bad spot on the gearing itself. Maybe what you hear could be something similar but more constant? My noise is getting worse, changing the gear oil didn't help. Definitely a scrape in the gears for me.Dave

As nice as lift would be, I gotta admit, all these various problems I keep hearing about with that 6 speed make me happy I didn't opt for the GT!

try not to down shift inless u need to stop in a hury brake pads are alot cheaper than clutch kits and or clutch pads and after destroying my syncros and bending my fork in my last vibe slamming gears isn't recomended and in MOP is what causes these problems

Try not to downshift in a stick shift... Alrighty then.I know after I had my clutch replaced, my first gear has an audible whine to it. I'm not too concerned about it yet, though. There is a bit of a whine in the other gears, but I think it's just the way the car is.

Thanks all for the info. I would really like to meet up woth someone in my area and have them ride with me so that they can hear what I am talking about. I have stopped the downshifting. I used to do it when I first got the car to try and wear in the brake pads easy and then I stopped doing it. But thanks for everything I am still going to change the fluid to see how nasty it is. Thanks again. Later

when I worked at a dealership, we had two Vibes with the same/simular concern... one needed a new transmission and the other had worn out tires... continentals...I would suggest taking it in and having someone go for a ride with you.

I have the same exact noise. Except it's more of a rattling whirr if that makes any sense. One of my friends with an 03 XRS took his to the dealer with the same noise and they ended up replacing the release bearing. That seemed to take care of it.

Thanks Mavrik and Mase I think that is what I am going to do is take it in just to be sure. And I know for certain that I am going to be riding with them this time. The first time that I had taken it in I rode with the service manager and he would shift it at like 2000 rpm. I really don't trust these guys much. But I am going to have to do something about it. I was thinking that it maybe along the lines of the release bearing being the culprit. Mavrik I have bridgestones on mine and I don't think that those would be causing the noise. I am not sure. Thanks again for all the advice. Later
