Fender Vents- What purpose?

Just out of curiosity, what purpose do fender vents serve? I like the way they look, but I hate adding body parts that have no real function, especially when there's cutting involved.~ Z600

Well they somewhat help to cool the engine and provide a flow thru effect in the engine when you are driving

And I think they are also used to cool the brakes down. Or am I thinking of some other vents.

See I was gonna say that at first too, but those aren't really fender vents those are like side skirt/wheel well vents
