2006 Pontiac Solstice: $19,995!

Post by ragingfish »

Quote »February 14, 2005The Promise of SolsticeGeneral Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz drives the Pontiac Solstice Roadster Concept vehicle on stage at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in DetroitBy Bob LutzGM Vice ChairmanDoing a great roadster for $35,000-$45,000 is a feat mastered by several automobile companies. In fact, it's relatively routine. It's doing that desirable, high-content roadster for under $20,000 that challenges an automobile company. That’s what we promised we would do with the Pontiac Solstice when we announced we would put it into production, and that’s what I’m officially announcing today, here on GM FastLane, for the first time. When Solstice goes on sale this summer, it will, officially, be priced at $19,995 — and that includes the $575 destination charge. You heard it here first. That’s not for a stripped down model, either. That sub-$20,000 price gets you 177 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission, 18-inch wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes, glass rear window, and a CD-player as standard equipment. So there you have it. A roadster inspired by the European classics of yesterday, styled very much like the concept car of a few years ago, priced under $20,000 as promised today. Solstice is a true driver’s car, and it will be in Pontiac showrooms this summer. We look forward to your reactions...http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/ar...#more

Sweet mother of... Bah! Even at that price, I can't afford it. Can't justify that as a primary vehicle and can't justify insurance on two. Oh well, guess I can dream.

Yikes! Way light. Incidentally, has anyone ever seen this thing with the top up? I don't think I ever have.

Looks a little like the old BMW Z3 Coupe. Kind of weird. I'll stick to lusting after the roadster. Of course there's always the Sky... blast it all! Too many stunning cars and so very little money!

Yeah, I said to the guys at the Philly auto show that, for the first time in my life, a car besides a Pontiac became my lust -- the Sky!

haha! Very clever idea, and it'll do away with that whole luggage issue. If they don't, they better hope that they have a bunch of people like me buying the Solstice. I have nothing, so therefore when traveling, just about everything will fit in one small bag. lol

Nice pricetag for a very slick car.My sister has been drooling over the Solstice for awhile now. She really will be once she hears the sticker price.But..one thing..I've a feeling that demand will be pretty high when these hit the dealers. Can anyone say "dealer markup?"

Time to go tradein our new vibe.... Our vibe MSRP was a bit more than that as well, but we didn't pay anywhere near MSRP.

I'd like to see what the real world prices come out to be. I'll bet you will not be able to get a $19,995 car at first (even without dealer mark-ups). They automatically put some of those options on that will push the sticker up toward $24k.

I was expecting mid twenties for starters.Quote »But..one thing..I've a feeling that demand will be pretty high when these hit the dealers. Can anyone say "dealer markup?" I'm afraid that may happen as well. The conditions are right for it - that's a good price, and even if the car isn't in that high of a demand, it's still going to be built in relatively low numbers. That can only drive up the price. That $20K car may end up being thousands more. And I'm suspecting we shouldn't be looking for the fat rebates on this car that GM slaps on so many of their other products. Unless they can't move the Solstice off the lot - kinda like they have had to do with the GTO and SSR recently.Gonna be interesting to find out though!

Not really an extended road trip car. It is more of a summer cruise and "make your neighbors jealous because they just paid four times the amount for their roadster" car. Don't even think you could get a set of golf clubs in there.

I HATE dealer mark-ups. You should just be able to cut the dealer out by going to http://www.pontiac.com and ordering one from the factory! Also, this car is one of the reasons the new Miata is getting all beefed up. Other car-makers are designing/producing small affordable roadsters, so Mazda has to redesign it's own before the market carries it away. The new Miata has dual exhaust in the spy photos. Can anyone say V6 or Rotary?

They're still around. They just recently released the new Mazdaspeed Miata MX-5 which comes with a stock turbocharger. 185 hp, RWD, and a light-weighing car.Watch for their 2007 Miata though.

Keep in mind, that's only the factory setting. You could get a manual boost control for $80 and get some more horses out of it. Also, Miatas are light, light, light. I've always considered their RWD to be a plus too, because they make great drifting cars.
