100,000 km service (60,000 miles)

Post by simon »

My 100,000 km service is due this weekend. One of the items listed is inspect for tappet noise and engine vibration. Should I need to adjust valve clearance to factory specifications (?) how do I do this?

Whoa -- you know, I love doing everything on cars myself too, but especially as it's winter I think I feel safe saying to let your favorite dealer/shop handle this one.The 100k service is a pretty intensive one, so if you're going to do the whole thing - let a proper shop handle it. Will be worth every penny.

^ I very much agree ^Question though - I have more faith in my local Toyota dealer than the local Pontiac. Don't get me wrong, the Pontiac dealer is great at selling cars and a super nice bunch of people, I just don't trust them with major mechanical work on Slick.Has anyone had this done at a Toy dealer, and would you recommend?

It's pretty involved from what it looks like... There's a PDF over on this thread that I dug up from somewhere: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=8160 You've gotta pull the cams on the 1zz, and there aren't really any "adjustments" per se, you have to replace shims instead. When I questioned the local Toyota shop about this service, the guy was a complete jerk and more or less said that they never, ever, ever do this service on any of these engines... Huh? So essentially, I refuse to give those jerks the satisfaction of taking my money, I'll take it to the Pontiac dealer for sure.Still need to get this done, the engine is knocking like a something or other. Don't know if the valves are out of whack or what, but it's bad, and the dealer still hasn't figured out what's making the knock occur.

Thanks guys,I think I'll call the GM and Toyota dealers and see if either have experience of doing this service rather than have them learn using my car. It's -23?C outside and not the sort of weather for tinkering with my car!

Sounds like a plan to me! Stay in where it's warm. Hopefully the Toyota shop won't be as stupid as the one I questioned about the service. Good luck to you, and do keep us posted on the service!

Well I spoke to the Toyota dealership, they told me no problem drop it off the night before we'll call you when it's ready.I went over to pick my car up - I figured I'd get the oil change, transmission fluid and coolant change done too. That's all they'd done! When I questioned them they said that if they were to do the tappets it would take several days, they'd have to strip down my engine, then order the shims, wait for them to come in, I'd be without my car 3 or 4 days. I replied that the only reason I'd brought my car to their dealership was because I had been assured that they would do this for me, I had given them a phone number to call in case there were any questions. So my wallet is $180 lighter, it would have been more but I supplied the oil and filters. I normally would have done everything they'd done in less time than they charged me for and I don't hhave the tools they've got!I'm really disgusted by their treatment and won't be going back. My engine is quite noisy when cold but when it warms up it's not too bad so I think I'll just live with it for now. I'm not sure where I'd get that work done now - our GM dealer has never done that service, the next closest Toyota dealer is about 100km (60miles) away.

Holy smokes... That's crappy! Did they quote a price for tearing the engine down?My engine is loud as heck too when cold, and it goes away once it warms up. I think the best option for me is to just get rid of the thing.

By that time I was too mad to want to know what the price would be!I'm told it's normal for some tappet noise when the engine is cold so you don't have to trade it in yet!!

Guess there are always other reasons I can find to trade it in. That does make me feel a bit better though, maybe my engine isn't trying to commit suicide? lol
