Anyone's vibe sound like a truck?

Post by Gala »

I feel like driving a truck, the car feels like a truck which I am not enjoying it anymore. There is this noise coming from the muffler underneath when I have the load on the car. Its weird, I let my dealer test it for me and they said it is normal. I feel like not keeping it when my payment is finished on it.

Hi Gala,Ya know, when I first got my GT, was driving in Ohio, Highway 35 near Virginia. Had 3 other people in the car. The road was Concrete, I believe. Man, I felt and hear every single seam in the road. Almost felt/sounded like I was driving on run-flat tires. I have since then change the tires. Not sure if that helped much but I have had 2 or 3 people in the car. also have had 21 landscaping bricks, 12-40lb bags of rocks (no, not all at the same time) and it didn't sound as bad as that one road in Ohio. But, I guess if ya use it like a truck, it'll sound like one... Once warmer weather sets in, I'm definitely either putting dynomat under plastic in the back or spraying it with an under sealant to help try to deaden some of the sound because it's still loud even driving in rain.Dave

Thanks for the reply, man this car doesn't have enough insulation to get rid of the noises. I mean I m crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, I am telling you I am mad about this car but I hear the exhoust pipe which I don't hear it in any other 4 cylinder sedan (Mazda3, Civic, Corolla). I wish I can put more insulation underneath of this car.

quick question....did you hear this when you test drove the car prior to buying it?
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!

hi AtombI think Gala seems to have his noise issue mostly when it's under some sort of load, as he mentioned in his first post. I also only have the additional noise/loudness when there's an additional 300 lbs or so in the car or when it's raining. I personally don't consider it a problem that's going to cause me to get rid of my Vibe. I knew it was louder inside by reading posts here before I purchased mine. (on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the worst, I'd give this a 3)I mentioned the dynomat. I would suggest that Gala install that in the rear if he wants it to be quieter. I may just end up using the spray stuff since it's a LOT less expensive. May not completely aleve the noise but it should deaden it a bit.Dave

Hey DavidPIL.This spray on stuff. Does it go under the chassis? Or are you talking about spraying it on the hard plastic in the cargo area?

Hi kep,I'm going to take out the 3 or 5 plastic pieces in the back (side panels, spare tire pieces) and probably spray the back side of the plastic... If it looks like it'll work. Then either spray the exposed sheet metal with the same undercoating stuff or line it with dynomat.I'm waiting till the temps warm up. Tried to remove a side panel but for this to come out easy, I'd have to flex a plastic panel along the bottom of the hatch. This will happen easier in warmer weather, with less risk of breaking something.I'll try to remove the panels. If I see it's going to be more of a pain than it's worth then I won't do it. Just trying it to see if it helps. I'm sure it will a little.Dave

Gala,The spray stuff that I was looking at is just a rubberized undercoating (will be very messy which is why I'm going to remove the panels). Can get is at Wal-Mart or Auto-Zone or any auto parts place, I'm sure. Probably found near the paint in most stores. Also can be found in a garden center. Same stuff used to spray on tree wounds/cuts. I'm going to try to see how badly it'll smell as well because I'm sure it'll stink at first. Another reason why I'll wait till it warms up so I can open the windows. I may just completely not do this and go with the dynomat stuff which you can get at any decent car audio place but that stuff is almost too expensive for me to think about right now.Dave

Hey David I just got a reply back from a guy thats in this forum, he gave me a good news He told me that he had the same noise, he went the same problem like me when he had the flud from his AC. He said that its fixible. His dealer actually had to point the plastic tube of the AC somewhere else, it seems that was pointing inside and that brought the noise in. You know how you have that plastic tube in the passanger side of the vibe and its easy to be get it kiced and loosen it by a guy that has long legs, and then you will notice the puddle. This noise that I am getting it is not normal, its coming from outside but it really feels like the muffler thats built inside of the car, spoils the fun, so hopefully fingers crossed my dealer can do something about this. But defenately I will get the spray too to get rid of the noise as much as possible. Thanks again, I think I may solve this problem, thanks you guys...

If that doesn't work, check your tailpipe gasket (at the exhaust manifold junction). Mine's gone and it's LOUD under load. And not a good loud, either. More like a loud snappy/raspy loud...Cheers, Marc
