How to wire tweeters

Post by Merzbow »

I rescently aquired a set of Audiobahn tweeters from Inder and I want to install them ASAP. Do you simply wire the tweeter wires into the speaker wires or do I have to run them to the headunit or what?

When I installed mine I just cut the wires to the old ones and spliced in the wires from the new ones. Blue is (+) and gray is (-) as far as I remember.

Depends on if you have M&T or not. If you do, then you can do as damron said. Depending on what kind of tweeters they are, you most likely can wire them in with the front speakers, or the headunit.

He does not have the M&T option on his car. I was gonna suggest getting the housing for the tweeters for the front doors and getting a crossover and using that to wire it up. What do you guys think?Inder

As for mounting, some have ways to screw them into the door panels and others you may have to mount a bracket like the M&T tweeters have. Not sure what the doors look like in the Vibes w/o the M&T.

They look the same except that when you look at the housing where our tweeters are at, their housing is completely flat.Inder

No capacitors to protect them? Or are they built into those tweets?

I think these have the capacitator built in, Atleast that's what audio expert Dima said (my friend). I'm not concerned with mounting them at the moment, I can figure that out later, I just want to know how to wire them now. I went to the dealer and their quote was $20 each tweeter housing!!!!! That's $40 for two of them. I was thinking about just cutting into the one I have now and making my own housing. What exactly is the purpose of a splitter and why would I want to buy those instead of just cuttingthe plastic and hardwiring the tweets into the speaker wire? Both the tweeter wires are blue with copper wire. So I wouldn't know how to tell the difference between positive and negative.

I have them there.. but don't hardwire into the original speakers if you don't have M/T because then you will drop the ohm load on the amp/HU and will prolly blow something depending on what it is rated for. I don't know what the ohm rateing is on the factory speakers but it would be better to get crossovers and wire you speakers through them.

I don't know what the ohm rateing is on the factory speakers but it would be better to get crossovers and wire you speakers through them. Some tweeters, such as the "Fultron" brand via WalMart are rated at a few million Ohms, and are designed to just 'wire in' with your speakers, so they can easily be added to your 85 Caprice.So..it depends on the tweeters. But yes..it would be better to get crossovers. You might be able to get them from Circuit City. I know we have a pair of Audiobahn crossovers in our back room.

I'm asuming the crossovers will cost about $20 each right?

Well, me and Dima successfully installed the tweeters! We bought a pair of bass blockers for $6.00 each instead of $100 crossovers. They sound AMAZING. Unfortunately like EVERY other mod I've done to the car there had to be a road block to halt the excitement. While trying to find a place to mount the tweets until I got the tweeter housings, one of the wires disconnected frmo the tweeter on the inside. I gues they were handled too much and the wires came loose one by one until all of them got disconnected. We could not fix it and I dont know how we will. Dima is going to go home and try to solder it for me. It sounded awsome for the 5 minutes they were both in. It took about an hour including the prep time and the circuit in the garage kept blowing from my heater and spot light. After that we installed Dima's XM radio reciever and everything. We wired the antenna from the trunk all teh way to the front taking apart all the center counsils and dashboard, also splicing the power wires and all that jazz under 30 minutes! We are gods He even got his activation number in that time frame. Thanks Inder!

Ok, problem solved. Dima soldered new wires into the tweeter and I re-installed it a few minutes ago. Sounds beautiful! I also just oredered a pair of the M&T tweeter housings from the dealer. They seemed to have no idea what I was talking about so it better be the right parts or im going to be upset

when i installed my tweeters i wired them up to the harness that is on the drivers side down on the left , i grounded it out to nearest piece of frame body and i have one problem. the drivers side tweeter has this constant buzz. it only comes on if the engine is on (if just the radio is on there is no buzz). it does not get louder as you turn up the radio but it does actually go along with the reving of the engine. ex. idleing its a slow buzz but when i accelerate it the buzzing gets faster right along with the engine. anyone have any idea whats goin on?oh and the passenger side doesnt buzz even though its wired the same

You think the dealer will cancel the order?!That would be hardcore if you could sell me yours! The dealers were $45 a pair.

This problem seems pretty wierd... with a little more info I think it can be solved though...

Will aftermarket tweeters fit in the factory M&T sail panels?I am trying to determine where to mount some Polk tweeters from a component set and there is no flat place to mount them. I also think the sail panels w/o tweeters are shallower, which is what I currently have.I saw some pics of tweeters flush mounted behind the door latches. Looks good but I am wonderign if they are too close to the passengers. I was also thinking of surface mounting them at the front of the cloth ceiling, just behind the top of the A-pillar.
