Anyone replaced the acc. power outlet with a cig lighter?

Post by jeffgtx »

i got a VW toureg LED cig lighter flashlight for christmas and of course the thing just rattles around in teh power plug. it needs to be in a cig light socket. anybody know the p/n for the cig lighter from teh smokers package? anyone with the smokers package want to swap for the acc plug? anybody done this swap? i hope that it doesn't require too much dash removal...thanks and happy new year.Jeff'05 vibe

According to my parts list, the dash outlet and armrest outlet are the same part number...

right, but thats for accessory power, and i need the slightly smaller sig lighter socker that houses a real cigarett lighter. that should be a different part numbre right?

jeffgtx--Seems like I got a 'socket sizer' with some item that used the lighter/accessory plug a few years ago - a radar detector maybe? I think it was plastic, so it'd probably melt and cause a huge mess if used with a lighter...BUT, IF I find it anytime soon, I'll email you to let you know.

yea i know what youa re talking about, i have one from a cell phone charger. i don't think that will help though because the touareg flashlight doesnt have anything that would tstick out past the platic part to make contact, and thus charge it. i think i need the actuall cig lighter.

I had the socket replaced in my car due to it falling out all the time... The car does have smoker's pkg, so it has the lighter as opposed to the APO in the dash... Here's what ended up on my paperwork that they replaced:88972603 LENS94855418 LIGHTER ASSY.94853080 RETAINERHope those are the proper part numbers... I'm going by an old post I made, since I don't have my service records handy at the moment to verify. Kinda strange that the flashlight wouldn't work with an APO... Usually it's the other way around - certain things won't work in a lighter socket, but work fine with an APO. Not really sure what the difference is with the two, but they somehow slightly differ... Good luck getting this sorted out!Do you have access to another car with a lighter socket to test the light in? That may be worth checking into before you tear apart the Vibe.

well, its meant to fit in a cig lighter, not a acc power outlet obviously (not obvious to me since i didnt see it coming!)the parts you lsit check out on gm aprts direct, so i think i will take the leap, but one questions...can you confirm that none of that was the actual ciglighter, but was the recepticle for it? i dont need the actual lighter that comes out.thanks for the post... and yes, i charged it in teh VUE and it works fine. now that i think about it, i wonder if i coudl switch the VUE lgither assy... great, now i can tear apart tow cars!thanks again!

Just checked the parts... To be honest with ya, I don't really know what was what that they replaced. When I saw 'LIGHTER A' on my paperwork, I was thinking that was "lighter assembly..." So I'm not quite sure if that part was the socket or what... I can only speculate that was the socket, I dunno... There is another post here: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=10144 that mentions the problem I had and the fix was a new retainer... But I don't know if that was what they changed on my car, the part number mentioned there doesn't show up on GMPartsDirect, and they changed more out on mine than just a retainer from what it looks like.I don't think the lighter itself was replaced, I never have used it so I couldn't really tell if it was new or not... It was in the console storage compartment when I brought it in for the socket issues, and ended up back in the socket when they were done with the car... Didn't end up with 2 of 'em, so if I did get a new lighter, they didn't give it to me. I'm thinking they just found it and stuck it in there.I'd say, just to be on the safe side, that you should probably check with your dealer's parts guy before ordering to make sure you get everything you need and that you're getting the proper parts... There may be another piece necessary to go from one type of outlet to the other, and besides with GM's lack of adequate part descriptions, no telling what you'll end up with. I wouldn't want to steer you in the wrong direction! Hopefully someone else here who has had issues with theirs can chime in to verify what is what...The stuff I posted may work for you, but hard to say for sure... As far as I can remember, a few GenVibers have gone from the lighter socket to the APO, I think you're the first to do the opposite. So you may be breaking new ground here!

That's cool, if you end up with the wrong parts and sue me you won't get that much. I'll just buy the stuff you bought from you instead, how's that? LOL! Hope that stuff will work for ya... Do keep us posted, and let us know if you need any help doing the ol' switcharoo! Looks like a bit of disassembly is in order to get the job done. I only know this because the dealer screwed up every piece of silver trim on the dash except the radio bezel, and also scratched up the shifter console when they worked on mine. *sigh* So I ended up having to get all that replaced as well. Good luck to you!

like a charm. followed GMJAP's install for center console (thanks GMJAP) acc power plug, except, i put a cig lighter instead of the power plug. fits perfectly in that same cap that he has. i had to pick that up at the dealer friday. so for the record, you just need the cig lighter assy and the bracket with the flip open cap and the flashlight fits like a glove and is happy.thanks everybud for the parts lsits and how to advise.Jeff

The other way around, methinks... Replaced the console power outlet with a lighter socket like what is on the dash (if equipped.) I think...

recap:filled the '05 vacant center console hole that USED to have a 12V acc power plug and inserted a cig lighter plus cap.so, my dash has its original acc power plug and the center console now has a cig lighter with a toureg flashlight set all nice and comfy inside.
