Cruise Control Not Working in Cold

Post by Space_Cowboy »

Okay, so here's the deal, I was really ticked because I noticed my cruise control (an expensive option) stopped working, but then the weather here in michigan (as it usually does) turned warmer all of a sudden and then the cruise control started working again, and then it got cold and it stopped, does any one know why it's doing this? is there someway that I or a dealership can stop this? My Vibe is still under extended warranty.

THAT"S a new one! My guess is there's something screwy with the CC servo under the hood...Should definitely be repairable...

Yeah, maybe it's just freezing up? I'd doubt any electrical issues if it's the factory cruise control.

One more thing to keep in mind is that if it's cold outside, you SHOULDN'T use your cruise control. If you happen to hit an icy spot on an uphill, your tires will spin uncontrollably as your cruise control tries to compensate. You might react in time, you might not, but you will be a more relaxed state because you've cruise control on. Personally, I only use cruise control in the summer, which is too darn short most of the time!

My guess is that water or snow got into the throttle/servo somewhere, froze when it was cold, melted when it got warmer, and re-froze when it got cold again.Don't overlook the fact that brake-light bulbs also are a part of the cruise control circuit. I admit it's HIGHLY unlikely that your brake-light filament would break when it's cold and start working again as it warmed up!

I won't use the cruise control in the snow or anything, but if it's not icy out, I'll use it. Yeah, there may be just some water frozen in the mechanism. I've checked the fuses and the lights and everything, the "Cruise" icon lights up and everything it just won't set and keep a speed when it's cold. The problem is, when I take it to a dealership, if it's cold out and not working, but then they put it in a service bay and it warms up and starts working again, will I get charged?

If you're still under warranty, there's no charge.Tell them not to put it in the service bay - that you suspect the problem is temp related, and to leave the car outside. Surely they can follow those simple directions!
