Adding Miles on new car? Help!

Post by NetRyderz »

Hi Everyone,Just to refresh, my wife and got a 2005 Base Vibe with the power package and auto transmission during Thanksgiving weekend.Through the normal work commute and a long road trip for Xmas, we've already amassed close to 2400 miles on the car (150 miles were on it when we bought it). We drove from St. Pete to Atlanta and it was about 1000 miles right there.Well, now we have to go back up to Atlanta this weekend and I really don't want to add another 1000 miles. I would take my car (Honda) but it is a manual and my wife never learned how to drive a manual transmission, thus, I don't want to be stuck driving the whole weekend although I wouldn't mind.Any advice? Thanks!

A car is meant to be driven.

I tend to put on about 700 miles a week in just normal commute, and have about 69K miles on it so far, so it's hard for me but if I try I can remember what it was like two short years ago when mine was new and barely used. Don't take offense to the good humored jibes telling you to get in the vibe and drive it as much as you possibly can If you don't want to take either of the cars you have, then you could try any of a number of options, such as: rent a car in St. Pete for the round trip that you both can drive get some cheap airfare, fly to Atlanta and rent a car while there to get around in go greyhound, and rent a car locally in Atlanta take the train, get a compartment, (supposed to be romantic, do something enjoyable while traveling ) and rent a car while there.Depending on what various rates are, how much money you are willing to spend to keep from having to drive the Honda or the Vibe, whether it's just you and the wife or the two of you plus a horde of little netryderz, etc, see what makes the most sense.Me, I'd drive the Vibe, but mine's not new and there's no hope of keeping miles off of it anymore.

I agree with everyone--our new fun Vibes are meant to be driven, so road trip and have fun! But I know how you feel--I've had mine for almost 3 months (got it used with 7700 miles on it) and this morning on the way to work it turned over 10,000 miles. Sort of a mini-milestone for me. On my old Sunfire I remember the day I turned over 100,000! My Vibe just doesn't feel quite like a 'virgin' anymore now that it has 10,000 miles! But it was meant to be driven, and I sure am having fun doing it! So take it to Hotlanta, and if you want the same romance as joatmon was talking about with the train--well then just fold the seats down!

I've got almost 90,000kms on my vibe (26kms on it when I got it) - I love to drive it and bet you'll take yours this weekend. get your wife to take a good book and you'll have fun driving the whole way.

I've been where you are at... Putting a lot of miles on a new car really bugs me at first. But in the end, to me, those few extra trips in the beginning probably didn't have that big of an impact when it was all said and done.If you want to take the Vibe, take it! I find it is a very comfortable car for the long haul... You'll enjoy the ride!

Take the Vibe...when I took mine cross-country, it had 1700 miles on it. When we got back, it had about 8700. It crusied well at 85, and got relatively good mileage.

That's insane. Yeah, I took mine to the East Coast and I was at 12600. And when I came home, I was at 16100. Changed my oil right there and then. And now, I'm at 24500 miles and not counting. I bought mine in September of 2003 with 45 miles on it.Inder

A bit insane, but was a great trip. My very first oil change was in Maryland, 3200 miles from home. Had to get it changed right after I got home. When I bought it new, it had 35 miles on it, 15 of them from my test drive.

Haha. That's cool man. Yeah, my car was driven from another dealership to the one I bought it from. They marked mine as a 2003, but in reality, it was a 04. I loved it. I got mine for $16k OTD.Inder

Thanks everyone,Leaving work today at about 3. We looked into renting a car but we are both 24 so those under 25 fees really suck.My wife doesn't mind taking the Vibe and I think I am leaning a little more toward that. I'll probably drive most of the way but don't think I want to be forced into it if we take my Honda. Atleast with the Vibe, I have the option. :-)Maybe, we'll cut back on driving the Vibe so much when we get back to try and make up for the extra miles at the beginning.Oh well, I guess we'll decide when we get home tonight! Thanks everyone!
