Clutch Replacement Cost?

Post by joatmon »

The clutch in my base vibe 5 speed is still just fine, and 65K miles so far. However, I am running the miles up there pretty fast (not as fast as some, like Savoy and pmh) but still plenty fast. Today I was abusing my Vibe by teaching my kids to drive stick. Made me realize that at some point I will have to replace the clutch. How much does a clutch cost for these cars, and how much to have it installed? When replacing the clutch, do you normally replace the throwout bearing, or the pressure plate or flywheel while you're in there, or do you wait till you have it all apart to see if any of those parts actually need to be replaced ?

I have never replaced a Toyota Corrolla (Vibe) clutch, I have replaced them in VW Golf, Dodge Neon and a couple other FWD cars. As a rule the clutch and throwout bearing should always be replaced. The pressur plate should be replaced if there are any signs of wear, I usually replace the PP just because of the labor involved. Several times the CV joints were replaced also, just because they were worn and had to take them out anyway. Total cost for parts clutch release bearing and PP is usually about $200. I have no idea what a shop would charge for labor.

Clutches can be cheap or expensive. Labor ranges depending on the shop you take it to. The dealers will always charge more, some smaller shops might be anywhere between $200-400 for the labor.Keep in mind, getting to the clutch on these cars is by no means an easy task. Or at least, it's a time consuming one.

Because of my turbocharger, I had to replace my clutch.I put in a lighter flywheel as well, AND while I was at it I had the shop put in motormount inserts. The labor was 300.00. But that was with extra stuff. You should expect not to pay more than 4 hrs, and certainly not less than two shop labor hours. Depending on what part of the country you live in that would be what $$$??? between $50 and $80 per hour. I whould buy the new PP and throwout bearing, and pilot if we need one.( I do not rememmber) Certainly have them grind the flywheel, but you dont need a new one. I dont think it is worth skimping out on the PP when there is so much labor to take out the tranny. I believe the stock clutch will can take quite a bit of abuse though. I was putting down 200 hp for over a year befor I changed mine.

I just bought the ACT clutch. I went to the dealer and got a quote to put it in. They said it was $450 for the labor. I can probably get it cheaper from somewhere else, but I'm always skeptical to have smaller shops do things. LOL Now, this was a Pontiac dealer. Will a Toyota dealer be cheaper?

DO NOT use a dealership. They charged me around $601 in labor. Find a small shop, it'll probably be around $300And, oh yeah, that's with me supplying the Clutch Kit and resurfacing the flywheel on my own.

I just had my clutch replaced on my Man. Trans. 2003 Pontiac Vibe at 207,000 km. It was beginning to slip in 4th gear. Canadian Tire quoted $4,000 but they even admitted they are not transmission specialists and recommended to go to a mechanic that specializes in the trade. I had a local shop just around the corner from my house. Single garage M&M Auto. All in it came to $1,700. The clutch kit itself was $451.79, resurfacing the flywheel is $150 and then there is the 7 hours of labour which is the real killer, but well worth it. Vibe drive's like new!
