September 24, 2004 - At the Gran Turismo 4 press conference at the Tokyo Game Show the biggest news hit the floor at the end: there will be no online after all. There was also a date given for North America and Europe and it was December 14th, but this news was followed by the unsettling phrase "will be trying to hit that date" which makes this Christmas look a little shaky for car lovers. But never mind the bad news because there was plenty to get excited about as well. Tons of cars will be included as well as miles of track and all the features you can eat. Get ready to start your virtual engines.A final list of cars has been decided and the list is over 650 cars in all. These include everything from cars that hit the streets this year to one that's over a hundred years old and several of them that are in between and all over the map. There are even some concept cars that have been included so players will get to try out cars that very well might never get made at all. And as for that ancient car? It's a three-wheeled vehicle from Chevrolet that dates back to 1885. Check back later for the full list of cars that will include some new additions like the BMW 120i and the Mazda 6 MPS.An interesting bit of info about the car designs here is that the current cars that are in GT4 require a lot more work than previous games in the series. Where one car could be finished in one day by a skilled programmer for GT2, the same job would take about a month in GT4. The level of detail keeps getting bumped up a notch in order to provide a more realistic experience and that has been affecting the courses as well. There will be some new courses to drive in GT4 and the old ones will feature an enhanced level of detail to make them more accurate than ever. Some of the new tracks include El Capitan, Infineon Raceway, and Suzuka Circuit. These have been carefully modeled from the real-life courses and this same rigorous approach was taken to the older tracks. All of the old tracks have been redone from scratch with entirely new measurements taken to make sure the races are pitch perfect. If anyone ever begins to wonder what has taken Polyphony so long to deliver this game, it's because they want to make it as good as they can and apparently they never sleep. The intense level of detail doesn't just stop with the mere racing game either. With over 6,000 possible cars available by tallying up all the possible paint and car combinations, the garage has been expanded to fit 1,000 vehicles. While we'd love to see the mansion that sits on that pile of steel, it's really a bout providing players with as many ways to play as they see fit. To make the massive amount of vehicles even more satisfying, they can now be shot in their natural habitats and players can have a photo as a lasting memory. There are two photo modes that players use here: Photo Travel and Photo Drive. The Photo Travel provides 15 different locations in which to place a car and take a photo of it. The map shows a red zone for possible car placements and a blue zone for possible camera placements. After that's been decided the player can zoom in or out, pan any direction, and even elevate the camera. There are even options to mess with the f-stops and add a sepia tone for an old-timey look. To top it off, the resulting image is a 1.2 megapixel jpeg that can be exported to a photo printer. To show off this feature, we were able to set up our own shots afterwards for a customized memento. There were no Ansel Adams' in the house, but it was still fun to set up shots in Brooklyn, Italy, or even Shibuya. The other photo mode is called Photo Drive and it can be done in any of the courses. The player selects a spot and the game will drive the car by for a shot of the car in motion. This can add some blurring if the shot is close or the player can even zoom in on an oncoming car to show it kicking up some dirt on a rally course. The choices are pretty much endless and provide an out of car experience that helps to make the game live and breathe a little more.In terms of getting out of the car, the biggest change here is the addition of the B-Spec Mode which focuses on strategy instead of actual driving. Originally, there was going to be a B-Spec Mode to follow up GT3: A-spec by a few months, but the full realization of this idea had to wait a few years. The point of view here is from outside the car itself and the player can give the driver instructions on how to drive. There are five levels of aggressiveness as well as specific instructions for any time of the race, such as asking to driver to pass the other cars. While this mode may seem like a no-brainer and the easiest way to win would be to put the aggressiveness level at 5 and leave for a snack, we were assured that there would be more to it than that. For example, giving the passing instructions makes the driver go outside of the driving line which helps to lose a few seconds and give other cars that are ahead an even better lead. As another balancing point, the speed of the race can be increased all the way up to four times regular speed. This enables players to keep working on the strategy without having to watch the entire race play out.In addition to this new gameplay addition, there have been many more changes under the hood. The sound has been revamped with Dolby Pro-Logic 2 support and all of the engine noises have been re-recorded. In GT3, the engine sounds were recorded with the engines running below the full throttle load. This time the throttles were fully open and the sound is louder and fuller, making the racing feel a little more intense. To make the graphics look even richer than they already are, there have been improvements in the human factor. There is a pit crew that will come out to replace the tires that looks good, but the most impressive segment showed a driver in an open-top vehicle racing down the street. Complete with a gear-shifting animation and extremely well-done hand and arm movements the result was like watching a long motion-captured sequence, but it was in fact game footage. It was amazing and it was hard to believe that we were watching a game and not some video footage. Even though these details will be invisible during the racing itself, it's good to know that even a seemingly insignificant detail is given a deluxe treatment. Did we already mention that we don't believe the developers ever sleep?Whenever GT4 does come out it will be a cause for celebration and this time it will be easier to share the joy with some friends. While there is no current online support, there will be LAN support. With the new slimmed down Atkins dieted SCPH-7000 with built in Ethernet this will become much easier in the future. We will have to wait until next year for some announcements about the online support for GT4, as cryptic as that may be, but at least we can now throw our new PS2s into a skinny bag and get it on in some group races. The only thing that hasn't been announced so far is the price. While we're sure that this will hardly be a limiting factor for fans of the series, it would still be nice to know so we can adjust our spending accordingly. Hopefully, this Christmas will be a happy one, filled with the roar of full throttle concept cars as they blast away in Dolby Pro-Logic 2.

Well the problem was the fact that for online multiplayer, they would have had to sacrifice a large number of the polygons per vehicle and landscape that they felt it would be letting the gamers down, the integrity (sp) of the game itself down so they cut the online option. Thats why the release date was pushed back but is as solid as stone so I was told today that its Dec 14,04.

Interesting. I was told at GameStop it was recently pushed back to January now. Circuit City's list says they won't get it till January 14th... LOVELY. The guy at GameStop surmised maybe they'll be re-adding online to it...but all speculation.

I was told by a guy at EB where I shop all the time for my games that online was out, the reason the date got pushed to Dec 14th was so they could program out the online option. Anyone remember GT2 with the dragster but no drag course option? thats cause it was removed but someone forgot to remove the car... So far still set for Dec 14. I'm holding my breath on this one.

Hey!!!I was just talking to a buddy of mine who works at one of the local GameStops and he was telling that he heard the reason for them removing the Online stuff from GT4 was due to fact the new PS2s don't have a hard drive bay in them anymore and that the GT4 online stuff needed the HD option to store all the files and speed things up. Just what I have heard through the grapevine and thought y'all would find it interesting......

Well the update from IGN.com explains it all... It was dec 14th but got delayed again! November 18, 2004 - There was worry in the Gran Turismo crowd last night. After we posted This Story stating that the Japanese version of Gran Turismo 4 would be delayed in Japan until December 28 of this year, the letters started pouring in regarding its U.S. release date. Sure everyone knew that it was likely that GT4 would now slip into next year here in the States, but there was no confirmation of it.There is now.In a statement released by Sony Computer Entertainment America this morning, the U.S delay of Gran Turismo 4 was officially authenticated."The release of Gran Turismo 4, originally set for December 14th, 2004, will change to the first quarter of calendar year 2005," said Ron Eagle, Public Relations Manager, SCEA. "With Gran Turismo 4, the company is committed to providing consumers with the most complete racing game built to date. Natural challenges with finalizing all the key features and localization issues across worldwide territories have led to the difficult choice of pushing back the release date in order to ensure that Gran Turismo 4 lives up to the exacting standards of the 36 million-plus fans worldwide that have purchased previous versions of our best-selling franchise."Eagle continued, "The Gran Turismo series has helped to define car culture and its fans have come to expect superior attention to detail combined with revolutionary technology that delivers unmatched graphics, realistic car physics, and an authentic racing experience that exceeds any previous racing title. Sony Computer Entertainment America is steadfast in our commitment to producing a superior product and is confident that the launch of Gran Turismo 4 will set a new benchmark for all other racing games to follow. With the history of the franchise and high consumer anticipation, Gran Turismo 4 still serves as an important part in Sony Computer Entertainment America's upcoming first party lineup."

Well Gran Turismo tries to stay as real as reality itself. If it takes a Honda S2000 1min35seconds to take Laguna Saga for one lap, then at the same speeds in the game, the Honda S2000 will not be able to beat that time. Its really reality based. I'm sure you will be able to do all the standard engine mods like intake, port and polish, Unichip and all that because you can do that to EVERY stock car in the game. But if the car does not have a turbo in real life, it probably won't in the game. I imagine that the standard engine mods on the Vibe GT will take it over 200HP but I really doubt we'll be able to install a stage 4 turbo with racing intercooler to boost that car up to 800-900HP...I hope to be wrong and we can lol.

Well if the Vibe doesn't have much to in the case of mods, hopefully the voltz will.46 Hondas? Oh well, the game is from japan and it is about cars that can be tuned and raced, I guess Honda has a lot of them. Most of the cars do not have images available yet. Oh well.

Envy also? Awsome though I'll miss fusion... no 04 colours? And how about modifications any seem possible or you didn't buy the Vibe yet to look? And GT4 is in HD so a HD tv they are saying obviously is the icing on the cake.

You can also do what they call "quick tune" or something and you can bump the HP up like 20% to 218 or soemthing and lower the weight by like 10% or something. It was pretty fun. I don't know if they will have body mods or not or what engine mods they will actually have. And yeah, they have Envy, Salsa, Satellite, Abyss, Lava, and whatever the darker grey was. The game looks great. Can't wait to get into it!
