rough reverse?

Post by dirtbag43 »

anybody else have a rough shift into reverse every now and then? my vibes only got 1000 miles on it so i guess things are still breaking in. its not that rough, just a little rougher than i would expect. let me know if anyone else has experienced similarities.

Hey dirtbag... oh, I didn't mean that in a mean sorta way..but yeah, sometimes it grinds, sometimes it won't go in at all and I have to take a second stab at it. If I have to put it in gear and back out in a hurry then I'm toast. My old Ranger was sorta the same way but just not as bad. Sometimes had to double clutch but it never went in smoothly. The ford place told me that it may be easier to put it into 1st and then into reverse but I dunno, I just lived with it.Dave

Reading http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=6084 it sounds like it's because there is no synchro on the reverse gear. I sometimes have this problem, usually only when first starting up, and if it doesn't go into reverse easily, I'll press the clutch and move into a forward gear and then shifting back into reverse is easier (assuming that the car is not moving at the time)

Reverse has usually ground a bit on every manual transmissioned car I've ever owned. Shifting into a forward gear before hitting reverse really does help. It's a habit for me now...pulling into my parking garage I'm usually in 2nd gear, but I'll throw it into neutral, let off the clutch and push it back in, move back into 2nd, then to reverse. Really does cut down on the grind and only takes an extra second or two of time.
