What tires fit stock rims?

Post by ragingfish »

Ok...I searched and searched, but couldn't find anything. I'm trying to figure out what size tires I can buy and still have properly fit on the factory 16" steel wheel. I know sizes both above and below 205/55/16 will fit on the same wheel without problem.I checked tirerack, tires.com, and 1010tires, they don't seem to tell me what tire sizes will fit a specific wheel...Can anyone help me figure out the range of tire sizes I can use on the same wheel, or point me somewhere that will help? Thanks!

I had some aftermarket aluminum wheels that were 16" x 7" and I put some 225/50/16's on them and it looked great. I think that size may be ok with the 6.5" wide wheel, but may be a little skinny. The 225/50's have about an inch wider tread, and looked great. Attached is a pic in which you can kind of see the size.

Judging by the way the sidewalls on the tires are buldging out I wouldn't recommend going above 225 on teh stock 16's then

Thanks!Mike, the "Specs" page for each brand/model of tire on The Tire Rack's site has this. Along with tire diameter, width, etc. it lists the "design rim width" as well as the minimum and maximum widths for each size tire. There may be minor variations between brands, but if you picka major company and use their data to narrow down your choices you can always double check compatibility for a specific tire when you settle on one.

To resurrect an old thread...I'm going to order snow tires tomorrow. I know narrower is better for traction. I want to mount them on my stock 16" x 6.5" rims. What size tire would you recommend for best snow traction on a stock steel wheel that, of course, will not interfere with handling, ABS, or speedometre operation. Thanks y'all!

Well, as far as going the "skinny snows" route with 16"s, about the only alternative to stock that would come close is a 185/60 x 16"(if you can find one), giving 815 revs/mile vs. the stock 811, but two sizes down is a little shaky for load capacity...

So basically, I should stick with 205/55/16 for stock wheels?

I dunno; the oposition usually gets into some pretty detailed background checks! Not sure if I'd want that to happen, JIC....
