Kart Vader

Post by JohnC »

Copied from another forum...Que. police trying to nab speeding 'Kart Vader' CTV.ca News StaffAn unidentified man has taken to strapping a video camera to a high-powered go-kart and dangerously racing through the streets of Quebec City. Now he is now trying to cash in on the stunt by selling a 45-minute long DVD on his website for $19.99.Calling himself "Kart Vader," the driver flies down streets and freeways at night at up to 160 kilometres an hour, sometimes barely missing other vehicles or pedestrians. "We've stopped counting traffic violations, there are too many; red lights, stop signs, pedestrians in danger, reckless driving," says Jean Mainguy of the Quebec City Police.Robert Bedard, a go-kart instructor, says the cart used on the video is a Formula 125, which retails for anywhere between $5,000 and $12,000. "It's not built for the road," Bedard says. "You can break the chassis, you can have a big accident. It's supposed to go on the racetracks." Like most stuntmen, Kart Vader warns his viewers not to try this themselves.A warning on the website's front page reads: "This first edition of a long series has been made for personal entertainment only. Do not attempt any of these stunts, as they were performed by trained professionals."Those who choose to hit "Decline" on Kart Vader's website are taken to a page for a diaper manufacturer. While the site is generating plenty of attention, Quebec police say they're worried about copycats. They are trying to find out who Kart Vader is and bring him and his accomplices to justice. Kart Vader says in response: Don't bother. "Even if you are part of any law enforcement, don't try to follow us in our future missions, as we want you to be alive," his website warns. Here is his web site. just click on "buckle up" for the 4 minute video. http://www.kartvader.com/ent.html

This looks to be in much the same vein as one shot about 20 years ago (and which recently emerged from the underground to commercial availability) called "Rendezvous", which was filmed from a high-powered sports car by a well-known (but unnamed) race driver as he fires up and blasts flat out through the streets of Paris at dawn. It had no dialog, only the engine and tire noise. Pedestrians leap for the curbs, he blows dozens of red lights (shifting at red line into 5th gear through one as I recall!), dodges garbage trucks, etc., and finally stops at some park, where as it ends, the legs of a female passenger can be seen embarking... It was amazing! (oh yeah, almost forgot the standard escape clause: "Remember kids, don't try this at home!")
