Max RPM @ 6400?

Post by bjlarson »

I have a 2005 AWD and I was cruisin' around today and noticed that my rpm would not go above 6400, no matter what I tried. Is there a restriction on the max rpm that an AWD can handle? Isn't redline at 8300?(not that I'm going there)Thanks!

Yeah. There's a beautiful thing which we call a rev limiter.Inder

The GT can rev to ~8300 RPM; the rev limiter for the base engine is ~ 6300-6400.

I'd be surprised at that. It should be the same. Mine kicks in at precisely 6400 rpms. And I've tried it many times.

How often? Gee, sometimes I do it several times a day...but with snow on it's way this weekend, I think the fun driving is over for now

I have my shift light set at 6200RPM because the limiter kicks in at 6400RPM as well.

Wow! we need to clone your ECM, Mavrik. Most of us base 5-speed pilots would love to have a 7,000 RPM limiter! (unless your tach just has a huge error...) (mine's 6,400 also )

There is a way to remove your rev limiter. I'm sure you can put some type of rev limiter in it, after removing the crystal in your ECU. Also check this out. Bad damge to engine with no Rev limiter:http://www.newcelica.org/forum...26792

Umm... I don't think you could change a chrystal in the Vibe computer to raise/eliminate the rev limiter. I think new values have to be input to the tables in the engine computer, or add a 'piggyback' user-adjustable computer. Agreed, eliminating it is just asking for trouble; sooner or later you'll miss a shift, lose a clutch, etc., then: BOOM! However, best acceleration requires shifting somewhat past peak power RPM (which seems to be ~ 6,000 to 6,200 on a Base Vibe, per various actual dynomometer graphs), to keep the RPM nearer the peak, so a 7,000 RPM limit would be about right, and I believe is factory programmed in some applications of this engine.

I know if I'm in a race, the RPM's will only go to 6200 and then the next gear and so and so forth.Inder

So is there a safe increase us base people could change to with programming? Mine cuts out at around 6400 but definatley not over.

Are you guys saying that on the 1zz's there tach shows the same redline as the 2zz's.That would be tacky, or at least serious tease.
