That is a good idea! Very neat how that guy hasn't owned a TV in so many years... I haven't had my TV on for several months now...

Yeah, well, I'd be PISSED if some crusading TV hater did this at my local sportsbar:Quote »But he said he would never dare silently kill the machines in places like sports bars, where patrons expect TVs to be on. "I can be mischievous, but I'm not going to do anything malicious, and I don't want to make anyone's life more difficult," Altman said. "I just don't like TV, and I'd like people to think more about this powerful medium in their lives." Altman does not contend that all TV is bad. "There's just so little time in all of our lives," he said. "Why should we spend so much time on something we don't necessarily enjoy?"I'm sure someone will try to ban these in public.

well for myself if nothing is on I turn the TV off or play a video game should I feel inclined to. Also I write a lot of role playing stuff so actually I probably spend more time online or playing a video game then I do watching TV. But I don't find myself bound to the tube or internet either, sure I can't just turn it off, I have things to look after online since I own a few websites and forums. But the TV? its screen goes blank when I see nothing of interest on.Now my folks on the other hand have not owned a TV since I was 4 years old, I'm 26 now.

But if it becomes a problem, all the TV owner needs to do is put a piece of black tape over the IR sensor on the TV.

Obviously this is not the case because if it was there wouldn't be any TVs in public places.

I have one of those watches with the built-in remote laying around here somewhere... It has to be programmed for the type of TV or cable box you attempt to control, and I lost the instructions for programming it. So, I can't turn any TV's off other than the one I have.

Some of the new PDAs can run remote control programs on them. They have a database of manufacturers and you select "Sony" or "Toshiba" and it tries a bunch of codes until it gets it right.

I have a remote control program on my PDA that uses the IrDA port, but it's not very useful since the range of IrDA ports is so short. I can't even control the TV from the couch....
