Flip Down DVD with Moonroof?

Post by Natron »

Is it possible? I've seen some vehicles with both and some that supposedly can't do both. Just wondering. If so, what's a good model (I am talking about the center flip down screen, with DVD in the screen unit, or separate)?Has anyone done it? Any pictures?I've searched Google and Genvibe, and I haven't found anything, other than the articles about the Vibe FX.

It should be possible, the installer just has to be VERY careful. If there's enough room between the top of the headliner and the sliding moonroof, it should be faily simple.Generally what happens is you need to slide a piece of plastic or metal up into the headliner, then, cut a hole in the headliner to run the wires. Run the wires down one of the pillars on the side, and screw the screen into the plastic or metal plate. You probably don't want larger than a 7" on the moonroof headliner. The weight will cause it to sag if you get any larger.Circuit City sells some Liquidvideo units that are pretty compact and have DVD players built-in. Word of warning: BUY THE WARRANTY. I have seen PLENTY of DVD units suddenly up and die. You want to spend money on the warranty, or you'll be out of luck when it happens to you.If you fancy a trip down to Atlanta, GA, i'll even put it in for you.

I saw 2 Liquidvideo models on Circuit City's website, the one I'd be interested in has a built-in DVD player as well as lights. I believe the one with a remote DVD player had lights as well.I'm assuming this would install directly over the light, and wire in to that after removing the light?

The domelights would wire into the existing domelight wiring and replace it entirely, yes. However, you'd still want to run power for the screen itself either off the radio wiring, or the ignition harness, as the wiring for the domelight is not designed for the power requirements of the DVDplayer/screen itself.

The reason I asked was because I saw a video on Crutchfield about installing a flip-down DVD player. In the video was a screen only unit, and they did run cables down (to what I assumed was the DVD player). If the DVD player was in the same unit, I assumed you wouldn't need to run that, since I believe the video also said something along the lines of "you might be able to run power straight from the dome light hookups". As I thought about this, I thought about the dome light turning on only when the doors were open, and didn't think that made much sense. Anyway, thanks.

I thnk the dome lights work by running 12V to the lamps all the time, and switching ground/open on the other side to turn the lights on and off. Theoretically you could run to a different ground and not be at risk of having the DVD/LCD go on and off with the doors.

Reading over joatmon's posts, I realized something. The Vibe domelights do NOT recieve constant 12v power. As told by the lack of a switch on the domelight. The domelights are controlled by the dimmer switch to the left of the dash.So..irregardless, you'll need to run 12v constant power up to the headliner for the screen, and also if you want to be able to switch the lights on the screen "ON" instead of "AUTO".

there's a wiring diagram of the dome light circuit at http://manual.shulsmann.com/Wi...l.pdffrom a 2003 Matrix manual. Not sure if there are any changes for '05, probably not
