The Scion xB: When did mail trucks become hip?

Post by Z600 »

(removed). I can't believe how many of these hideous little boxes I've seen on the road. Toyota, I forgive you, since you gave us the Matrix and Vibe, but shame! Shame on you for mindwashing the public with your fancy lighting and computer animation and techno-tracks! Luring poor feeble-minded buyers into junk designs with trendy, pointless features... have you no conscience? Seriously, though. xB's are the ugliest thing to hit the road in ages. A '91 Ford Festiva's got more style than these things. If you're a fan, go ahead and flame, but I'll just feel sorry for you. ~~Z600

Bless your little heart. I hate to see people become victims of advertising. ~~Z600(Keep in mind, no matter how much sugar you sprinkle on poo, it's still poo. Fancy options on an ugly car make for an expensive ugly car.)

The xB is HIDEOUS! It's a friggin' BOX. Of all the cars out there on the road, this one wins the "all show and NO go award"! I mean c'mon, it's gotta have the highest drag coefficient on the road...I wonder if it can even break 85pmh?

I totally agree. (removed) ugly. Honda started the trend with the Element- I think Toyota just went after the market opening they created.Still, though, it has its virtues if you don't mind the sheet-metal around a go-cart looks.

I love it. If it weren't for the fact that I love power, I would get one of those. I think it looks great, and I liked it before the fancy advertising.

I liked it way before the advertising campaign too, the Element on the other hand is a different story.

The advertising campaign for the scions is great. Now granted, I could probably drive a tC, or an xA (under duress), but an xB? Woohoo. You can choose your stereo system, and tiny-(removed) wheels, and they make tons of aftermarket parts, but what the hell? It's a bloody box. With lights. I could make a more attractive car out of a refridgerator box and an electric motor.

I kinda like the Element and Scion XB. I was actually looking at the Element before I chose the Vibe. The only thing I didn't like about the Element was the ugly gray plastic cladding plastered over the sides. Those vehicles have the ugly duckling syndrom. They are good looking because they are so ugly. Interesting and cool because they look so different from anything that is out in the market. And personally I think the XB looks a hell of a lot better than the XA. JMO

So, was the Scion modeled after the old Toyota B8? They look exactly the same.I kinda like them too...they fit into a certain life style. As long as they are custommized I like them, if I were to see one completly stock being driven by a 70 year old lady then I don't think I would like it too much.

Does anyone remember the old Saturn ad campaign that showed everyone driving a cardboard box except the Saturn owner? I guess the people that like the xB thought those ads were for the boxes.

It is a box but that is what people want, something different and not lots on the roads. I do not hate it or like it, it is what it is. Boxes are coming back, remember the old Boxie Jeep Cherokee Sport made from 1984 to 2001? The new Jeep Commando is coming out and it too is similar to a flattened square box. Why? Because the Jeep community, the people that like boxes, want a boxie Jeep back. I suppose drivers will have to have no underwear on because that is what "Commando" means to me! XB means XBox...

Don't know if anybody ever watches the auto shows when they are on TV, but vehicles that have a boxy shape are HUGE in Japan. All of the automakers over there have their own design concept. And lets not forget the VW Microbus concept a few years ago. Possibly one of the ugliest vehicles I have ever seen. IMO

I like the xB. It has NO Performance whatsoever - but is very practical for an urban lifestyle. Its also very budget friendly for someone in college who has a lot of stuff to haul around (musical instruments, DJ gear, etc).It also is great for advertisers. The car is very attention grabbing (both positive and negative attention) and has alot of surface area for mounting graphics. Its basically a mobile billboard with lots of room for SWAG to be handed out at concerts - campuses - etc.You can disagree on its looks - but its very practical and very economical.

IMO In Japan the boxes are huge, but here in Korea...not at all. Maybe it's because the Korens aren't real fond of the Japanese (that whole occupation thing between WWI and WWII), but people over here don't drive boxes. The hot sellers over here are all domestic sleek sedans...the sleeker and more luxuirious the better. The Hyundai XG350 is the epitome of a lot of cars on the road here...black, chrome grilles & wheels, and tinted windows.I'm not real fond of the xB, but more because of the dash...I can't stand those center-mounted instrument clusters! Dumbest idea ever introduced. Looks all wrong and it's not even functional! But I do like the VW Microbus concept...that looks cool! Yeah it's a box, but it just looks right.
