Anyone know how to read VIN #'s to see what # yours was produced?

Post by cohocarl »

Just wondering if you can tell from your VIN number (I haven't even looked at mine) what "XXXXth" your Vibe is? I don't know if I'm wording this right. Thanks,Carl

Usually, it's the last 6 digits with the first car starting with 100001. However, some plants start with a higher number. If the first case was true with the Fremont, CA plant my Vibe (VIN ending in 420749) would be the 320,749th built. I doubt they built that many so the Fremont, CA plant may start at 400001 making mine the 20,749th Vibe built. That seems more likelyDecode your VIN:The first digit is the County of Origin: 5 = USAThe 2nd digit is the Company Built By: Y = NUMMIThe 3rd digit is the GM Division: 2 = PontiacThe 4th and 5th digit are the model: SL = Vibe; SM = Vibe AWD; SN = GTThe 6th digit is the body style: 6 = 4-door hatchback/liftbackThe 7th digit is the Restraint Codes: 2 = Manual belts w/driver & passenger front air bags; 4 = Manual belts w/driver & passenger front & side air bags; 6 = Active (manual) belts w/drivers and passenger inflatable restraints (front and side) automatic occupant sensor (passenger)The 8th digit is the Engine type: 8 = 1ZZ engine; L = 2ZZ GT engineThe 9th digit is a check digit (see below how to calculate)The 10th digit is the model year: 3 = 2003The 11th digit is the assembly plant; Z = Fremont, CAThe 12th thru 17th digits are the sequence number: 400001 = 1st carCheck digit:To determine check digit (9th digit) of your car you need to take the VIN and assign any letters in the VIN with a set value (number) as follows: A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4, E = 5, F = 6, G = 7, H = 8, I = 9, J = 1, K = 2, L = 3, M = 4, N = 5, O = 6, P = 7, Q = 8, R = 9, S = 2, T = 3, U = 4, V = 5, W = 6, X = 7, Y = 8, Z = 9Any numbers in the VIN remain the same (not replaced) and thus you have a 17 digit number.Then you must multiply each of the 17 digits by a set "weight" (multiplier). The weight applied to each digit is as follows: 1st = 8, 2nd = 7, 3rd = 6, 4th = 5, 5th = 4, 6th = 3, 7th = 2, 8th = 10, 9th = 0 (check digit), 10th = 9, 11th = 8, 12th = 7, 13th = 6, 14th = 5, 15th = 4, 16th = 3, 17th = 2After multiplying each VIN digit by the associated weight - add up the results of all 17 products. Then divide by 11 and the remainder is your check digit.If the remained is 10, then the check digit is 'X'.Here's an example: VIN = 1G1BL52P7TR115520 (note '7' is the check digit) VIN: 1 G 1 B L 5 2 P 7 T R 1 1 5 5 2 0Assigned Values: 1 7 1 2 3 5 2 7 7 3 9 1 1 5 5 2 0Multiplier: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 10 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2Add the products: (1 X 8) + (7 X 7) + (1 X 6) + (2 X 5) + (3 X 4) + (5 X 3) + (2 X 2) + (7 X 10) + (7 X 0) + (3 X 9) + (9 X 8) + (1 X 7) + (1 X 6) + (5 X 5) + (5 X 4) + (2 X 3) + (0 X 2) = 337Add the products: (8) + (49) + (6) + (10) + (12) + (15) + (4) + (70) + (0) + (27) + (72) + (7) + (6) + (25) + (20) + (6) + (0) = 337Divide 337 by 11 which gives you 30, and a remainder of 7 which is the same as the 9th digit of the VIN.Source

My number is 448683, probably meaning mine was the 48,683rd built. I bought it two days after it arrived new at the dealer, on November 12th.I have full time daytime running lights on mine, and my VIN starts with a 5. Who has something other than "5" for a first number? Did american destined Vibes have DRLs? I know they are required for canadian cars, but my vibe lives in Kansas, USA. Did my dealer steal one destined for Canada to sell to me?KSNeptune.

nope...all Vibes came standard with the DRL's. Us Americans keep trying to come up with good ways of defeating them. My Vibe is number 43,015.The check digit and that whole process, it that an algorhythm that is supposed to deter VIN fraud?

Well, I just received my VIN number today (Dec. 17th/02).According to the posts, my vehicle is the 55,505th vehicle built. (455505 last six digits of the VIN) Isn't that past GMs forecast of something like 44,000 to be built in the first year? No wonder deliveries have seen huge delays, especially up here in the Great White North. I don't think we should blame GM so much. The folks at NUMMI are doing the best they can. To that, I take off my hat and wish them a Great Holiday Season!!! Happy New Year Nummi employees!

quote:Isn't that past GMs forecast of something like 44,000 to be built in the first year? No. The original estimate was 55,000 units built and 42,000 sales. As of the end of October, there were 30,462 sold (over a 10 month time span). There have been a average of 4,400 sold over the last 5 months (the first few months were slow with only 33 and 507 sold the first 2 months). If that sales average continues over the next 2 months that will but the total sales around 39,500, only 2,500 off the estimates. However, if sales in November and December are similar to October (6,500) that would put the total sales very close to that 44,000 estimate.

My car is 26678, purchased off the lot. I had drove by the dealer all summer and fall, never to see a Vibe. My wife was home sick on the 30th of Dec and I took our 3yr old for a drive and spotted a Neptune GT. I drove a base & awd, but never a GT. After discussing it with a sick and groggy wife (who just wanted me to stop talking) I bought the car (12/31/2002). I had assumed it was a newborn, by all your post it may be older than my second son (8/7/2002). I will have to check the door tomorrow. PS-The hum of the exhaust puts the baby to sleep. The high speed cam make the three year old scream- " Daddy's the fastest "(good boy!)

Wow, so what you're telling me is my Vibe is #7049? (Last 6 digits = 407049). I wish it weren't at the dealership getting fixed, and I'd go look at its manufacturing date. I bought the car in July 2002.Mine VIN also starts with 5. And, my car was assembled in California, which I did not know. I was told by the Toyota dealer that all CDN Matrixes & Vibes were assembled in Canada. My 4th & 5th digits are SM which must mean AWD.My 7th digit (restraint code) is a 4 -- is it because I have side air bags?Cheers!

quote:I wish there was just a universal guide to all the possible variations and what they mean...I have looked all over hte internet, but can't finda a damn thing. When you search on Google, Lycos, etc., use the terms ISO and VIN. There is a common FORMAT to the VIN and some fields like manufacturer code and model year have a universal meaning, but each manufacturer is allowed to set many of their own specs in keeping with that format. All Vibes, for example, have '3Z' before the last 6 digits of the VIN. The '3' means 2003 model year (that IS a mandated field) and the 'Z' is a plant code for where the car was built. Z means NUMMI, but if Volkswagen, for example, wanted to use 'Z' to mean their Wolfsburg, Germany, plant (just to pick an example), they could.2004 Vibes built at NUMMI will have '4Z' before the last 6 digits.- Earl

I bought mine off the lot on 12/30/2002. It's a number in the 27000 - 28000 range, built July 02Scott, Thanks for the VIN interpretation post back in September

quote:I wish there was just a universal guide to all the possible variations and what they mean...I have looked all over hte internet, but can't finda a damn thing. Z means NUMMI, but if Volkswagen, for example, wanted to use 'Z' to mean their Wolfsburg, Germany, plant (just to pick an example), they could.2004 Vibes built at NUMMI will have '4Z' before the last 6 digits.- EarlThanks Earl, that's great info!

I now see that my build # 49,241 was manufactured in October 2002. I bought it near the end of Jan. 2003, so it went unsold for about 3 months. Hard to believe as these VIBES seem to be very popular. It is a monotone Nepture Blue with AT and Power Package MSRP $18,690. Perhaps everyone wants a sunroof these days.

quote:First "5" must mean Canada. Thanks!Actually, "2" in the first position means Canada. "1" is US, and I think "5" means US with less than a certain percentiage of US content. At least, that is what I have read on the Net. You Matrix owners... what is the first character of your VIN? - EarlThe first character on the Matrix vin is "2".

Just checked my sticker in the driver's door jamb. It reads "476792" after the Z in the VIN number. So I guess this means it's number 76,792 built in 3/03 and I took delivery on 4/24. Seems like so far I have the highest number, latest built Vibe on this site. This also seems to be much higher than the original estimate of Vibes to be produced for 2003. What's up with that? There is also another number on the bottom right hand corner of the same sticker that reads "BA3198783", any idea what this number means?
