Under-dash LED's

Post by ColonelPanic »

Just got done from adding (more) LED's under the dash of the Vibe. This set changes colors - each module has 6 LED's (2 red/2 green/2 blue) that will fade off and on in certian sequences. According to the package, they will create 7 different colors. So, that's a total of four modules and 24 LED's under the dash now. With the way they are positioned, the passenger's side door panel will turn red then purple, while the driver's side turns a green/yellow color. Reflects a bit in the chrome on the door, too. Doesn't do much to light the floor, however. (although the brake/accelerator light up purple and red.) I thought about wiring them independently, so I could switch the blue LED's off, but the multi-color ones weren't as bright as I had hoped. So, I just wired them together to have an intense blue light coming from under the dash, and a subtle color-changing thing going on to complement it...I'll try to get more pics later if anyone is interested in seeing them.

Makes the interior a bit more interesting at night. Here's the lights that I bought, for those interested:http://store.tireflysonline.co....html

Thanks for the positive feedback! Still haven't been able to get too good of a pic of the colors though, the interior is just too dark for my camera to really pick up on it. But hey, those blue ones are plenty bright. lol

The LED's that I have are now on clearance... $6.99 for one 6-led pod! That's pretty cheap...I've got a plan....... More details to follow. In the meantime, if anyone has any interest in these, get 'em while you can.http://store.tireflysonline.co....html

They don't come with a switch... But all I had to do was put in an Add-A-Circuit, tapping into the CIG fuse so it's switched with the ignition. Then, I mounted a switch in the area near the hatch glass release button. Aside from that, removed the kick panel on the driver's side and connected the ground to the bolt there.Stuck 'em up under the dash with some double-sided tape. Pretty easy!

But I got a possibly-lame question: Do they interfere with your vision while driving at night? I turn down the brightness of the gauges at night for that reason, but maybe it's just me.

Got my LEDs today...yay! They're a lot smaller than I thought they were...tiny little things, but they apparently put out a lot of light. I can't wait to get them in the car now. I don't think they'll interfere with vision, though I'm not the one that's tried it so I can't say for sure. I keep my gauges turned up pretty high because it bugs me when they're too dim, and I'm just looking to accent with a nice blue glow in the floorboard. It seems subtle enough that it shouldn't be a distraction, but that could differ from person to person.

Please post some pics when you get them in so we can see how they look. I was considering getting some, but I would like to see exactly how they look before I buy!

I'm enlisting the Colonel's help with this one...so it will be a couple of weeks yet before I get them in. It will be the same as what he has in the picture he posted, though, only with just the blue ones instead of the multi-colored alongside. But I will definitely post pictures anyhow! He has some more action shots on his picture page though.

Here's a bunch of pics of the ones i currently have in there. http://photobucket.com/albums/.../led/I'm going to also add two in the front door map pockets, and maybe somewhere else too. It's going to be bright in there at night. They aren't too terribly distracting... Takes a little while to get used to, but it wasn't too bad on mine...

Here are the pics of my under dash LEDs CP installed for me Thursday. They're actually brighter than they appear to be in the pics, and the pic of the switch is blurry because my camera refuses to focus in the dark...but eh, you get the idea. I only found them distracting for about the first 5 minutes, then I got used to it. They're mad cool, trust me. Passenger SideDriver's SideAll the way across, with one pod visibleSwitch

I put some red LEDs in the air vents in my Vibe about a year ago. They look absolutely great. I got them at Circuit City and got the switch from Jeg's. Too bad my camera sucks or I'd try and get a decent picture

Are they pods like what we both have, or are they the strips, or something else? How far back in the vents did you stick them?

That is very cool idea. I wondering how you do that? How long take you do that?

Ragingfish has also done it, along with various other LED installations, one of which didn't quite work out the way he intended but I believe he did the vents portion in one day. It looks really cool.

Hey, no problem...The best way, I think, to get power to the LED's would be to use some sort of Add-A-Circuit. You pick a circuit that you want to tap into, remove the fuse from the fuse block and install it into the Add-A-Circuit, then install the Add-A-Circuit into the fuse block where you removed the fuse. You can find these at AutoZone, Pep Bouy, or the like. Just be sure to make a note of what size your fuses are physically. Here's what one looks like for the standard full size blade-type fuses:Now, you may need one for the small fuses, that's what we had to use with our Vibes. As far as what circuit to tap into, I can't help ya there. Try to find something that is switched with the ignition (radio/cigarette lighter/etc would be good.) Just don't tap into anything important (i.e. fuses for the engine computer, air bag, abs, etc.) The black wires need to go to a ground, which you should be able to find somewhere under the dash. Try to look for a bolt that screws into metal and attach the wires there.Hope that helps...

Thats a 12" purple cathode under the driver side dash.. I don't have a problem with glow interfering with my night vision tho, I use to have them on the ceiling of my old car.
