Horsepower is wrong on da Vibe

Post by nismo »

Has any noticed this, I know I have. I noticed on the Celica GT, the horsepower rating is at 140. Weird thing is that the same motor is in our cars. The 1zz. We're (base model/XR) rated at 130. If anyone knows, I'm curious why this is.Inder Singh

Yeah. I think that this is why the Celica sells way more than the vibe/matrix. I see more celicas on the road around my house. so, yeah.Inder Singh

There is an old thread on this, I did not take the time to dig it up. It concluded that toyota did not want the matrix/corrolla/vibe to have the same hp ratiing as the sports car celica. I dont agree , though. What I have learned from SF in their tuning the turbo kits to match the different 1zz application, is that the motors are tuned differently. The timing in the celica is more agressive making more power in the Celica. The redline in the celica goes to 7k. It is the same with the mr2 spyder, which is rated at 138hp. Our cars are tuned more for fuel economy than performance. Mind you, It still has VVT-i , in which the power band is wide gleaning as much power in each rev range. But, it is still not tuned as agressive as the Celica. In my case, with the turbo it is ok, because i am not as proned to predetonation because my timing is a little more retarded than a celica. Yet, it is not more retarded under boost than stock, which some kits do.Sooo, that is how I see it.

Those previous threads had charts showing the stock Base Vibe dynoing at ~ 120 wheel HP, which is way high for a "130 HP" engine, but about right for 140 FHP, since the drop from flywheel power is generally around 15% or slighty more. 120/0.85 = 141 HP

AEMs dyno curves do show about a 7 hp (6+15%) difference from the same dyno but you never know about ambient temp etc. The Matrix looks a hair stronger at low RPM so I would think the curve isn't biased against it. It would take 2 cars in good tune run after each other on the same dyno to get a real answer.

So basicly Toyota could be telling the truth with the Celica and us Matrix XR / Pontiac base Vibe owners are being lied to about the 130HP and actually have 140HP? cause that would be cool if I actually had 140HP.

I think faultlines got it right and there is a bit of difference between the Celi and Vibe but not the full 10. http://www.aempower.com/pdf/dy...S.pdf http://www.aempower.com/pdf/dy...S.pdf About 7hp with the 15% compensation.

With my new AEM CAI, I can definitely feel that big torque increase around 4,000 RPM!

I think some of the loss in horsepower is due to the exhaust piping, the exhaust on our cars is a bit less straight than the Celica's

id rather reintroduce a topic than dig up a 2 year old topic and read outdated info... i think its sometimes better to reintroduce a topic because "updated" suggestions/comments/solutions can be gathered from the members here who have gained new knowledge on the topic...just my $.02

hmm I wouldn't have thought stuff including the celica GT engine would have been included in that result but, eh, oh well

The celica exhaust does a u turn at the muffler. Tha can't be good for flow so i don't think that's it.
