under the seat sub install

Post by hobbiteater »

Does anyone have any information on mounting a sub underneath the seat? I have a 10" sub and I saw a picture one time of someone that had it mounted underneath the passenger seat. thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out!

It would need to be a really shallow sub....I have an Xbox under the front passenger seat with a 2" thick mount I made underneath and it barely fits, there is less than 1/16 of an inch in some spots

Did you see it in a Vibe? Or just some car? Some people heavily modify their car in the name of sound, and they may have dropped part of the floor to give it the correct airspace..

Yeah. It would be very weird to have a sub where people's feet are at. And like someone already said, the sub has to be very shallow. And the sub can't flex with out hitting a sharp corner. Not to shoot down your idea, but I would not reccomend putting a sub under your passenger seat.Inder Singh

As you can see from the picture, it looks pretty nice in his setup. From what I measured, there is roughly 6" from the bottom of the seat to the floor, and my sub was about 4.5" high. I was able to get in touch with the person that made this and he said they used MDF and fiberglass for the installation and that he had to take a sledge hammer to dent the floor in a bit and allow the sub a bit more room, lol. I think this setup looks really good, but may be difficult to do. I just want to leave as much room as possible in my car and this seems like a sweet setup.

ya, that looks very nice, but taking a sledge hammer to the floor? yikes! and what size sub are you going to install you say? 8"? because if i were you, i'd wait til someone installs the new 05 sub panel in the 03/04. see how it works. might be cheaper than having to pay someone to fiberglass and build a custom job.

I am using a 10" sub, not an 8" Sorry for my ignorance, but what is this sub panel you are talking about? I guess I am not that familiar with this stuff yet. I'm still a n00b

Ok, I just got a reply from one guy who has done this before off the matrixvibe forum. Here is the reply I got from raamaudio. This is a fairly involved undertaking, not much room to spare. On the stock seat version I had to tap down a circle on the floor about 8" diameter, 1/2" deep. Not hard to do for somebody like me(I cut the whole rear floor out and rebuilt it for amp installation room, 5 big amps). Anyway, I tape off everything with several layers of well overlapped masking tape, cut a bunch of odd sizes of glass mat, mix up a good size batch of resin, spead some out, cover with an overlapping layer of mat, more resin(I use big cheap paint brushes to spread it) then repeat unitl I have several layers built up. I do make a form for the sides and back, etc, first, places that are against the car can be about 1/8" thick, if not supported by the car then 1/4" thick. Once I get that done I work out the top design with MDF, very very tight fit to make sure the seat can slide, sub not hit by anything, etc. I screw them together then glass over the whole top overlapping the mat to ensure it stays together . Next I dump in about a cup of resin and slosh it around to make sure all the inside areas are fully coated, especially in the corners, etc. Then alot of sanding to get a decent surface to carpet. For the bottom, I add another layer of resin mixed extra fast curing and coat it then sand off when dry. I do the inside as well to make sure the surface is sealed up well and does not stay sticky. That is about it, takes alot of hours, nasty smelling stuff, dust from sanding, etc. But, the end result if done well, is very rewarding. No loss of usable space, the best place sonically and does not effect the balance of the car. Antonio(Tonedebass) runs on road courses with his installed and I ran autocrosses with mine in the car, we both were very very fast;)

I'm still a n00b well unfortunately, it's only an 8" enclosure, but i wonder if you could do a little work to it to make it a 10" or even fit an 8" solobaric (what i have currently)

Ooo that looks pretty nice, is that something you can purchase for a 2004 if so, where can you buy it? I saw the one that the guy had on ebay, but shipping alone is $36 O_o I'd really like to make one myself, but I am not sure I posess the necessary talent to do so, lol. Thanks again for the heads up on the ebay guy.
