ATRAC3 question

ok i am doing some research on sony MD stuff. how does one convert mp3 files to ATRAC3 format? i have an older sony MD player(2 years old). it hold about 80 mins of music on disc now. supposedly if i convert to ATRAC3, it will hold like 5 hours worth. how do you do this? i could find anything in the manual.

to add some info and another question...i am in the market for a portable mp3 player. i like the ipod and other mp3 players, but the new sony hi-md player keeps cathing my eye. 45 hours of tunes on one disk is pretty cool, plus it acts as an external drive and you can store image files and some other ones too. the thing i like about mp3 players is that you can look through a directory or folders more or less. anyone know is that concept the smae on the new sony MD? or do you just go song by song in a row? i know you can make playlists on it.

Is yours a "Net-MD walkman?" I think it needs to have that "Net" enabled bit and has software to do the straight conversion. Otherwise, the player itself automatically records in ATRAC3. Usually you would use an optical audio cable to go from your computer to the player, and the software transfers it over.In the newer players, you have Sony software that does the conversion for you. Not sure about how it works on the newer players.. I had a brief interest in MD when it came out, but it never caught my eye afterwards.. Sony offer any user manuals online?

yes its a net MD. i spent the last 2 hours trying to find info. i found a good MD forum type site, but i just dont understand the gargle. i am just confused with it all. my eye has shifted away from the new sony MD palyer to the iRiver 140. it looks pretty nice. thanks though

Depends on what you want to use your MP3 player for. I like to work out with mine (jogging, gym, triathalons etc...) so I went and bought a Rio S50. It has 128M of memory (expandable to 630 or something like that with a 512M SD card). It came with a NiMH battery and recharger, and a padded clip, all for about $80. They don't make it anymore, but they do have the S35 which is about the same. I use Real Player to manage my music. There is a feature that allows you to convert all tracks being downloaded to the device to your choice of quality (56k, 128k, etc.). If i use the lowest setting, I can get just over 4 hours on there with the standard 128M card, and i cant tell the difference in quality with headphones.Some people I know have IPods, and they swear by them. I personally didn't want to spend $300 on a MP3 player that I would be working out with. Plus, all of my music (some 26Gigs of it) is on a seperate computer that is hooked up to my living room stereo/TV, so I don't need a seperate device to hold it all.

i dont know which net md you have but from my understanding(i could be wrong since ive never used the software.) it automatically converts it but you have to select bit rate when importing the file."from the drop down list you can select the bit rate for conversion of audio files from the other formats to the atrac3 format" import window pg.26 of the openmg jukebox version2.2 booklet. dont you have this?

I use a net-md mzs-1 sports minidisc player.You must use the sony software to convert the files. It is a "check in", "check out" format. As far as i know thats the only way.then once you "check in" your music off of the disc then you can convert it to whatever you would like.

yeah, i figured it out last night when i got to my bunk. i had never used the computer burn method, i just used my playstation and copied songs from the cd. the lp4 way is pretty cool. i have like 50 songs on a disc and its only 1/2 full.

yeah that what i do. the disc and computer cable is still sealed in thier bags.although since i got the sat radio a havent even listened to md's.

LP4 mode isn't really that great. It uses "joint encoding" for the left and right channels, so music that has a lot of "separation" between the two channels won't sound very good.LP2 mode is far better. When I compare LP2 to a CD original, I really can't tell the difference. LP4 mode is very obvious in a side by side comparison.I hang out in the alt.audio.minidisc newsgroup on Usenet and there is lots of great discussion there. i record live shows in LP2, it sounds great!Its great to see people really use this media, i thougt for a while it was going out...........Recording in multispeed (lp2 lp4) must have helped the sales, now i see them all over. Now you dont have to lug around a big DAT.
