Extended warranty?

Post by hjwii »

So, I still await a new Vibe... But, riddle me this - should I get an extended warranty up to 100K miles? I drive between 45K and 50K a year, so the initial warranty will be gone in about 9 months... and the extended in about 2 year.A lil insight is greatly appreciated...Thanks, hjwii

I'd buy it if I were you, just make sure its a very good policy from a good company. Some take your money and refuse to cover any of the repairs you might come across...

THe extended warranty is thru GM... covers an array of pieces parts, but does exclude the clutch, brakes, carburetor, exhaust and shocks. Cost: $1,150...

when i bought my vibe i asked to see the chart showing how much of a price increase there was if i waited....from what i remember it was a matter of a hundred dollars more if i waited to buy the extended until just before my warranty ran out.i decided not to buy based on this. i'll spend the extra $100 then if i need to but at least i have 60K Km to decide if i need it!ask them to see the chart showing price increases based on miles to purchase the warranty later...that way if you seem to be having many 'warranty runs' to the dealer you can go ahead and buy it later. it may cost a bit more but that little bit more might be negligable (as in my case).
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!

Quote, originally posted by hjwii »THe extended warranty is thru GM... covers an array of pieces parts, but does exclude the clutch, brakes, carburetor, exhaust and shocks. Cost: $1,150...at least the vibe doesn't have a carburetor The vibe is still pretty young of a model to be able to guess what kinds of things you may need to have replaced in the first 100 K miles, but since it's a corolla at heart we are all hoping that some of that reliability will carry over to our vibes. You could take the 1150 and put it in the bank, and use it to pay for repairs after the 36K mile warranty runs out. That way if you don't need it then you still have the money. If you buy the warranty with the car, then you can probably fold the warranty into the car loan.I didn't get an extended warranty. I am betting that the car will be reliable, and it has been so far

I got a letter form GM last week asking if i wanted the extended warranty that I turned down when I bought the car. My thoughts are that I can save the 1500 the warranty will cost plus the 100 deductible and replace/fix anything but the motor. (and I have seen some used ones for relatively cheap).OR, you could use that money and buy a beater car for about 1000 dollars and use that to do the bulk of your driving. I did that when i spent 600 on a 91 escort that I could rack up miles on and not have to worry about putting miles on my nicer car. Plus, you get an insurance break for having more than one vehicle insured.

I am not planning on getting an extended warranty for the Vibe since it is all Denso parts. Nonetheless, I am going to get one for my Maxx, and the best place to get a warranty is from the manufacturer (check out the Edmunds warranty chat pages if you need any more convincing). 3rd party warranties are very shaky to say the least. Now we all know that GMPP is highly inflated in price, so my advice is to buy it from http://www.capperautocenter.comI have shopped over 30 places (wheeling and dealing on a GMPP), and capper is the lowest by far. These are great folks; give them a call. And best of all, it is a genuine GMPP. Let us know.

GM extended warranty is very good. Its those aftermarket/third party ones that are a little tricky.
