Water Softener use

Post by GoLowDrew »

We just got a water softener from Sears. They tested the water and said that it need to be set at "9".Question:Someone at work told me that I need to adjust the setting by at least 5 (5 = 1 ppm?) because of Iron in the water. Can anyone comment on that?

I couldn't tell you for sure...but I know that we use an additive called "Iron Out" to reduce the iron concetration in the water.Might wanna ask your plumber or installer their professional opinion...

I would get a testing kit. We bought ours from a USF Watergroup (there's a factory here). I think it was about $30?The kit allows you to test your own hardness ... but I think that actually setting the softener is a bit of a guessing game, and it all depends on the model & capacity of the softener. Before we installed the softener, our water was 33 (grains per gallon are the units, I think) and now it's 1 or 2.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. But seriously, I would think that it would be difficult to know how to adjust the softner without establishing a benchmark reading and testing periodically to see if adjustments are needed. And be careful not to drop any Viagra into the water!
