Moon & Tunes system: a bit of hisssssssssssss

Post by LavaTroll »

Last night in a quiet parking garage, I was idling and putting in a CD before driving away. For the first time, I noticed a very audible hisssssss as soon as I put the CD in and before the music started. When the music came on, the quiet bits between drum hits were NOT filled with the hiss.I can only liken it to music recording: when you compress a musical signal to even out the peaks and raise the valleys in apparent volume, and that signal ceases, the tiny bit of noise inherent in the signal chain is dramatically raised (the compressor just thinks it's doing its job). When the music returns, the hiss softens immediately or gradually, depending on the attack and release settings. Is the Moon & Tunes system that poorly designed? Is there indeed some compression going on (I've seen it as a switchable option on an older GMC stereo) or am I just hearing the hiss of potential power? It's nothing to complain loudly about, but it does smack of poor quality control.

If you turn off the car, take the key out and hit the recall button on the radio, the clock comes on and you hear this hissss. Delaer told me it was normal... go figure!!
