A quieter muffler.

Post by Sean »

I know this sounds weird to most of you , but how easy would it be to have a quieter muffler installed? I like my cars to have as smooth a sound as possible. I am thinking of buying a Vibe or Matrix next year.I really love the cargo and seating space.

AutoZone, Pep Boys, ect. should have the standard mufflers used for passenger cars, and may give you what you want. But know this, the exhaust system in place is actually pretty quiet considering you hear engine intrusion way before you will hear the exhaust at higher rpms. It may help smooth it out to a more tame level, but a new muffler could mean more restriction on an already highly restrictive exhaust system, and less power.

Thanks Flipside,That makes sense. I wouldn't want to change it if it affected performance adversely.Actually, when I test drove a Vibe, the engine was pretty quiet during cruising. It was only during excelleration or while I reved it up, that it was loud. I noticed tire and road noise during cruising more than the engine. Do you think cargo and floor mats would help with that?In reality, it sounded much better than I was led to believe from reviews I have read.

Unfortunately, the Vibe is not the quietest vehicle I have owned, and I also would like the high rpms muffled a bit. I agree with you on the road noise in the car too, but I really don't know anything to do about it. besides buying more expensive tires. All in all, it is very tolerable. Especially since this is such a great car.

I would get a magnaflow center muffler....it goes after the cat...by the mid section of the car... must be welded.

I actually like the sound of my Vibe when the other lifters kick in. Sounds like a rally car. Cant wait to get an exhaust on it, too. The Vibe is only loud when you want it to be. It's fairly quiet when cruising on the highway, unless you're use to a Caddy or something. LOL

Yeah, you can tell a difference with the CAI. It will be more noticeable once I get the exhaust on. I wouldnt get slow boys to wash my windows. Getting parts from them is ok, but their service sucks.
