Want to 'fix' a loose moonroof switch?

Post by kostby »

I bought my Vibe used (it is 2 years old this month) VIN # 17xxx, , so this may be peculiar to my car, but...I've been annoyed by the loose feel of the moonroof switch. I use the tilt/vent switch on the left end much more than the open/closed switch or the light switch, and it seems like every time I push on the switch, the whole left end of the switch unit moves up into the headliner, and back when I release the button. I figured that the excess movement would eventually crack either a) the switch trim plate or b) break a contact in the switch itself, so I figured out how to fix it before I had to shell out money to replace either or both of them. The problem, in my car, anyway, is that there's about a 1/4-inch gap between the back of the switch assembly and the solid surface of the moonroof mechanism behind it. The switch is held in place mainly by the headliner, and even though the headliner is stiff, it isn't stiff enough to keep the switch from moving. (For more info on the headliner, SEARCH for another post in this forum about removing and installing the headliner).I took out the screw on the gray trim plate first. Removing the trim plate reveals a screw holding the switch onto the roof surface. I removed it, and cut a small piece (maybe 2" by 3") of corrugated cardboard to fill the gap on the left side of the switch, between the switch and the moonroof mechanism. (The right side is raised and holds the lightbulb), so it doesn't need a filler.I cut it to fit on the back of the switch, but I didn't use any tape or adhesive to hold it in place (yet), because the moonroof mechanism is right above it, and I didn't want to 'gum up the works', in case the cardboard happens to migrate with friction from the moonroof mechanism. Results: It eliminated 99% of the movement.Tools needed:Small Phillips screwdriverSmall piece of corrugated cardboardHeavy scissors or utility knife to cut the cardboardTime required:5-10 minutes
