Good news: Picked up my Vibe on Thursday.Bad news: Finally drove it during the daytime yesterday, and got an unusually bad headache. Oh yeah, and what Silverwad said. Synthetic oil maintains a consistent vicosity over a wider temperature range....so the engine labors less when cold, and it is protected better when HOT. So if you make lots of short trips in the winter, synthetic might be a good choice.

Synthetic oil lasts longer, some places I've read up to twice as long. Whenever I use it I let it go for about 150% the time of normal oil. So no, the dealer isn't feeding you BS for once.
