Re: Transmission may be gone... :(

A CLUE! Well, maybe a clue. I was following the procedure for removing the transmission and reached the "remove the starter" step without too much trouble. I removed the electrical connections, removed the upper retaining bolt (I bit of a pain, but not too bad), and removed the lower retai...

Re: Transmission may be gone... :(

IS there a clutch master cylinder/reservoir under the hood?

Should I be looking under the dash in the cabin?

Does it share the brake reservoir?

Inquiring minds want to know.... :)

Re: Transmission may be gone... :(

Linkage looks good. I don't see a problem with the clutch slave cylinder. Haven't found the master or reservoir (Is it hidden by the brake fluid reservoir?) I'm in the process of removing the transmission. Currently dealing with a very sticky driver side shaft. Any other thoughts, chime right...

Transmission may be gone... :(

My wife has been driving our '03 Vibe with the 5-speed manual transmission sense we acquired it in 2015. Other than wheel bearing and half shaft replacements, it has been a nice workhorse commuter car for her. The other day, while driving in 5th gear at probably 45mph, it started some serious thumpi...

Re: Steering Knuckle

I'm replacing the CV Axle on the passenger side. Seems like the one I have from O'Reilly's is a little short. I was wondering if possibly the axle was the correct length but the knuckle just didn't match it. Check out the Scary Noise thread for more details and photos. I have a second one on the way...

Steering Knuckle

I'm having a problem with my '03, front wheel drive, manual transmission, vibe. I'm wondering if there were different steering knuckles for the various model years of the vibe/matrix?

Anyone know?

Thanks

Re: Right Front CV Axle Fitment?

Well, it failed. Search for "Scary Noise", got a replacement axle from O'Reillys under warantee, but it fits the same. I'm ordering another axle this time from Parts Geek. Anyone have experience/advise for where to get a better quality Axle?

Thanks

Re: Scary Noise

OK, the inner boot on the axle was completely torn. Pulled the axle, as soon as I got the spindle out of the steering knuckle most of the axle just dropped to the ground. The steel cup that has the spindle that goes into the transmission stayed stuck in the transmission. I do mean stuck! It was a be...

Re: Scary Noise

Well it got worse. Pulled the wheel and checked to make sure everything was tight, put it all back together and things worked fine for a couple days. Then when I made a sharp left u-turn, BAM, scary noise. I coasted into a parking lot. I couldn't move it at all under power. Had it towed to the GM de...

My wife started to drive to work in her '03, manual trans, front wheel drive the other day. The wheels happened to be turned to the left. Right Front CV Axle Fitment?

My old CV Axle had a 30mm star axle nut, and the inner boot was attached to a 3 lobed bearing cage (not sure if that's the correct term). The replacement axle from O'Reilly has a 32mm hex axle nut and a smooth bearing cage. I've installed it, but not reassembled everything because it seems like the ...

Re: Right Front CV Axle Continued...

Now this is just killing me. OK, I got the seal in, no problem. Put the new axle in, seemingly no problem. Put the axle nut on, takes a different size socket. 32mm hex. The new axle also seems to be too short. When I get the axle nut tight, the inner boot seems to be stretched more than I would like...

Re: Right Front CV Axle Continued...

Excellent! Now I can re-assemble and get this baby back on the road.

I'll remember to lube it up, the GM guys told me the same thing when I picked up the new seal.

Thanks again. I get more/better information here than on alldata! :P

Right Front CV Axle Continued...

I've been working on replacing the Right Front CV Axle on my '03 Vibe. I purchased a reman'd unit and installed it with only minimal issues :P. After driving it for a couple days, I noted a small oil leak. It was clearish oil from the gear box not black oil from the engine. I figured I must have dam...

Re: Seating the right CV axle

OK, I figured out it wasn't seated correctly. Did a little digging on the net and based on that pulled the circ clip to see if it would fit. It did, so at least I had the correct part. Compressed the circ clip a little and replaced it, the after making sure everything was lined up, "persuaded&q...

Seating the right CV axle

I've been working on replacing the right CV axle. Now that I have it in, it seems like it didn't go in far enough. How do you tell? Any photo's of what it should look like would be appreciated (I know, I should have taken a pic b 4 I removed the old one  ).

Thanks

Re: Surprise When Replacing Front Right CV Axle

O'Reilly guys tried to tell me that these new (actually re-maned) Axles are balanced better so they don't need the damper. Of course that's a bunch of horse hockey, but I'm installing the one w/o a damper anyway.

Re: Surprise When Replacing Front Right CV Axle

I was checking the old axle compared to my new one. The old one has a rubber donut clamped on the shaft between the boots. The new one does not.

What is it and do I need it? :)

Thanks in advance folks....

Surprise When Replacing Front Right CV Axle

I'm replacing the front right CV Axle (half shaft, half axle, whatever else you can think of to call it), on my '03 FWD 5-speed manual, ABS equipped Vibe. Had a little trouble getting the shaft out of the transmission, used a pry bar and out it came....along with copious amounts of fluid. Was NOT ex...

Re: Wheel Bearing Saga

Enjoyable video, but doesn't really help with my problem. I was able to remove the knuckle from the car, and was able to press out the hub. What I can't do, because I can't get the blankety-blank retaining ring out, is to press the rest of the bearing out of the knuckle.

Wheel Bearing Saga

I purchased my brothers '03 vibe for my wife to use as her commuter car. My brother is an engineer :ugeek: who faithfully records mileage, fuel usage, and changes oil every 3000 miles, so I figured this car would be in relatively good condition. It is, but after a couple years, I noticed a noise com...
