Installed new HDD - Need help.

I got an IBM/Hitachi 200 GB Drive as a second HDD for my computer. I plugged it in tonight and fired up the PC. The new drive shows up in the BIOS and Windows XP (Pro) was able to detect it, but it does not show up in explorer. I have a 60 GB IBM drive as my "master" on the Primary IDE cord, and a 200 GB IBM/Hitachi drive as the "slave" also on the primary IDE cord. There are no new drivers to install as far as I can tell. (tried to download already) Hardware installation wizard was no help. I am running Windows XP Pro from the 60 GB HDD ("master"). Can anyone help me?

kaybeejay, did you get any error messages during your installation, or did it appear to be a completely clean installation? If you got error messages, do you remember what they were? Also, do you see it in My Computer?

Is the new drive partitioned and formatted?you may have to go into control panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management, set up a partition on the new drive and then format it in order to put a logicial drive on the disk that windows can then start to use.

No error messages at installation. The system started up normally and I got a little "new hardware" alert. That was it.The drive doesn't show up on "My Computer" either. The Jumpers are set to "slave".I pulled the drive right out of the box. Don't those things come pre-formatted? I guess it doesn't hurt to reformat it again - I will try it.

How about this? I asked this same question on another board and I got this reply:Quote »From Microsoft Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/d...97694New Drive or Mapped Network Drive Not Available in Windows ExplorerApplies ToThis article was previously published under Q297694 SYMPTOMSWhen you create a new volume on a local diskplug in a removable disk with existing volumesplug in a removable drive (for example, a USB floppy drive or PCMCIA flash card)add a physical hard disk or CD-ROM drive to your computeryou may experience any of the following symptoms: an existing mapped network drive is no longer available in Windows Explorerthe new drive is not available in Windows Explorerthe new drive appears in Windows Explorer, but when you open it the contents of the existing drive are displayedthe existing drive appears in Windows Explorer, but when you open it the contents of the new drive are displayedAfter your computer starts, the network drive may be replaced by the new drive. After you disconnect the new drive, the mapped network drive letter has the same logical drive letter that it had before you added the new drive. You may receive the following error message when you start your computer: The local device name is already in use.NOTE: The new device (or drive) may appear in Device Manager or the Disk Management console. CAUSEThis behavior occurs if you map a network drive to the first available drive letter after the drive letters for the local volumes and CD-ROM drives. When you install a new device or volume, Mount Manager, which assigns drive letters to volumes, does not recognize the mapped network drive and assigns the next available drive letter to the new device or volume. This causes a collision with the existing mapped network drive. WORKAROUNDTo prevent this issue from occurring, when you map a network drive, assign the highest available drive letter to the mapped network drive. To work around this issue if the new volume appears in Disk Management, specify a different drive letter for the new device or volume. To do this, follow these steps: Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.Under Computer Management (Local), click Disk Management. In the list of drives in the right pane, right-click the new drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Path(s).Click Change, and in the drop-down box, select a drive letter for the new drive that is not assigned to a mapped network drive.Click OK, and then click OK again. Both the mapped network drives and the recently installed drive appear in Windows Explorer. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATIONBy default, Windows XP assigns mapped network drives to the highest available drive letter, starting with drive Z, to avoid drive letter collisions. However, by default, Windows 2000 assigns mapped network drives to the next available drive letter after the drive letters that are assigned to local volumes and CD-ROM drives. If you bought the drive from someplace that says your drive is formatted for Win XP Pro, then you shouldn't need to reformat. I was looking for this information, and couldn't find it. I must be suffering from overload today. Anyhow, give the advice from Microsoft a shot, I think you will find it fixes your problem.

what type of motherboard do you have? I know of a lot of ppl that had that same problem with Asus motherboards. The bios does not except both drives set up that way for some reason. There is a current updated bios that helps.

Make sure you go into Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. In the tree on the left, click Disk Management. The disk you just installed will liked be Not Active. Right click on the RIGHT half of the drive (not where the name/letter are) and click Mark Partition as Active. If that is not an option, click Format first. Format it, then mark as active.Give that a shot!

Nono! That's right! A 200 Gb drive will ONLY format to 187 Gb! As you go up in drive size, you lose more available space for the formatting. It's just something that happens! This is why a 1.44 Mb High density floppy formats with 1.2 Mb of available space. I think there was a lawsuit about that a few months back, about how HD manufacturers need to state how much formatted space a drive has, not what the total space is..Also, no Harddrives come preformatted. You always need to partition them, especially with XP around, because not everyone would use NTFS or FAT32. Well..some drives might, but not the ones you'd pick up in the store..
