T C tensioner "O" ring=--

Post by jamesmetairie »

05 Vibe with about 167,000 miles.

Usual story. Oil leak for many months . My honest, experiecned mobile mechanic thought it was coming out of the two wires around near the bottom pulleys. we changed the valve cover gasket at least once. changed a grommet to do with the two wires.

I,m planning to have him just change the O Ring for the timing chain tensioner.
Toyota dealer says on the 05 corolla there is two different O Rings.

To make things as risk free as possible how about just changing the O Ring and not the tensioner itself.

Any one had luck like that.

If it is the timing chain cover, is that a major job?

Also it will be appreciated if some one knows the part number for the O Ring.

Hoping this Vibe will be in the family for several more years .

Thanks for any help.

One thread here about just replacing the O-ring is viewtopic.php?t=43333

In that thread, kamloops identified the Toyota part number as 9030122013. That's the one I used successfully on an 03 base.

It's a pretty easy thing to do on a base (1ZZ) WARNING - its much more complicated on a GT (2ZZ)

I don't have any docs on just replacing the chain cover gasket, I attached a PDF of the steps to replace the timing chain on a base/1ZZ. Looks like the first 21 steps are needed to just get the cover off, (step 14 might not be required to just do the gasket)

definitely doesn't look trivial

Again, the procedure might be different for a GT/2ZZ

Thanks joatmon

I,ve never seen so many " be careful"etc.,etc. in my life. (lol)

My mobile mechanic is about 65 now and I have a bad feeling about him replacing the T C cover gasket.

It,s only the month May , but the heat feels like mid August in New Orleans already.

Tonight I ordered a tensioner from Rockauto.
Sure hoping that fixes it.

Thanks for the advice
