I am attempting the Audio Switch project covert from a bare bone model.

Does anybody has a 09+ Vibe GT ? Does the Audio Switch Pad illuminate at night? Please let me know.

I actually just drove one at night last weekend. I don't recall that it does but I am checking with HarleyQuinn to see if it does.

Confirmed ! As a side note, the only buttons on any of the doors that illuminate, which have power windows/locks, is the "auto" button on the drivers door. Good luck finding any of these in the dark  A very poor design as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you folks,

Ok.. so only the Volume +/- has light.. "Mode" has nothing.. just to confirm.. It is too cheap for Toyota to make one more button to light up. It kind of stupid when people Lean Manufacturing 5S and all those jazz. the company invent them just see having a extra light as the "Customer Want" instead of under the "Customer Needs" column.. or perhaps at the "its good to have" column.....
No wonder Hyundai have so much more features into their car..

In theory if I practicing Lean manufacturing at home, my future wife could divorce me in no time.

Now I need to check the wiring diagram to see where is the power source for lighting at the volume pad.

I will break it down into 2 phase.

Phase 1 ,after doing a quality check with the clockspring from ebay then do the swap.

Phase 2, do the wiring between clock spring to the head unit.

This section is to remove and replace the clockspring. I tried yank out the steering wheel by hand but it wasn't successful. This time I brought a slot type pulley puller.
Fig 1. Removing the cruise control and the bag. All non GT vibe comes with the "base" clockspring that doesn't has the audio control switch.
Fig 2. Before placing spine puller, check the bolt holes for clearance. looks like a M12 x1.25.
Fig 3 Using shaft puller to pop the steering wheel out, remember to use marker to mark the wheel position relative to the spine.
Fig 4 steering angle sensor, it is a delicate part, and it might require zero point calibration if steering was not being centered through out the process.

next step is to start running wire between steering wheel and the head unit

preparing to instal the wiring harness.

Oh yeah forgot to tell you, at the cd rom cable, it instead of 3 separate cables bundled together, the black wire on the analog cable is a mesh and woven around the red and white wire , like your coax cable for your antenna.

I took the head unit out. However the pin and the harness are totally different than Toyota. My project is in limbo.
Now I have no clue which pin from the head unit is for the steering wheel audio control.
If anyone has a 2009+ Vibe GT head unit wiring diagram, please post it here, many thanks..

Please take a look the pictures to see if I label the wires correctly.

Sorry my previous post the wiring colour is out of sync.
Now I tidy it up a little bit without pretend to be high tech and snapping bad picture with bad lighting environment.
Could anybody plz tell me which pin from the head unit is wired to steering wheel audio control?? or any generous soul could find a 09-10 vibe head unit wiring diagram with steering wheel audio control pad.

This is from owner of Chevy Cobalt who is doing the same thing as I do. This Micro64 connector is widely use for GM since 2001.

I hope i could more or less guess which wire should go with the steering wheel audio control.

There is another mystery is Cobalt is a comlpete GM product, the audio run wire back to BCM (body control module) and OnStar. I personally don't think we running the wire this way. We might only wire the head unit directly to OnStar.

Unless someone who has a 09 or 10 Vibe GT or Vibe 2.4 (Driver package) with 7 speaker(U65) premium audio system with mp3 (ULA) with steering wheel audio control (NK4) and be able to take their head unit off and give me a photo of their Micro64 connector. I will be having a tough time guess which is the correct wire.

Another possible source for Radio Wiring Diagram. Chevy Aveo. Daewoo design and produce Aveo but with a Chevy Badge.
But then it got only 2 pins are responsible instead of 3 pins that Toyota uses. (1 ground SWG , 1 SW1 input, 1 SW2 input )
At Aveo photo, pin 12 at A plug, and Pin 12 again at the B plug. According to pictures posted before,
We have pin 12 is empty at A plug (14 pin connector) but we have a light green wire at (16 pin connector)
So i guess we are different than Daewoo..(GM Korea)

Upon research here is the designation for each of the 3 wire from the audio control pad to a TOYOTA head unit
Connector D3:
EAU (common/ground for steering wheel control)
AU2 (mode switch circuit)
AU1 (volume +/-, Seek +/- circuits)

Just got the head unit terminal diagram by sending a request from Delphi Automotive OEM website.
File too big.
I do not think is a huge deal i guess. Very few people interested in this project anyways.

Good job! I've gotten so used to these controls on my GT, that every time I get into my wife's Explorer I try to use them, and they are not there! Wish hers had them too, but it is apparently an involved process like the Vibes, with a new clock spring and then having the radio programmed at the dealer to turn on the remote steering wheel controls. More trouble than it is worth for a vehicle I drive like twice a month.

Agreed! With what is involved and the "tedious workmanship" required, this is definitely a mod most of us would not even attempt. I for one admire those of us who go the extra mile to perform such mods. Very nicely done ;)

Uh... I am 99.9% sure that the "MODE" buttons on the steering wheels of both of our 2009 GTs light up as do the volume and up/down buttons...

It is the first time I done any electrical stuff. I only have some knowledge with normal maintenance, brakes, changing serpentine belt. something small.

Lucky I brought 50 terminals so I could practice crimping and understand how to make a good connection.

For the lighting up part, I guess i need to splice some wire to get it to lid up, now I have no light on the control pad.
My lucky guess is there are two type of sound systems in vibe GT and lighting for the control pad is comming either from the amps (monsoon) or at the Accessory power(non monsoon). As far as i know, people from Tundra Solution run a 4th wire that tap from the parking light wire.

As far as I concern, I don't like to open up the interior or else all those plastic piece will be super loose, or else i need to buy lot of foam tape to fix those rattles from loosely fit plastic trim pieces.

This diagram is the most important piece of info for this whole project.

This is the pin number 12 i suppose. You could tap it either from the Hazard light switch or your Traction control switch.

I can confirm ALL buttons on the horn pad should light up.

I had chosen to use the shifter light as my power source, since the connection plug is a bit over sized and allow me to (removed) in a little strand of wire inside easily, however you could tap from any illumination"green" wire as your 12 v power source to the clock spring pin #12 at J45

At first I still could not get the light to turn ON on my control pad despite my best effort.

Then I do my little trouble shooting just before a huge snow storm caome past Sunday by using multi meter to measure if there is a 12 V power showing on the face of the clock spring pin.

I realized my terminal #12 at the clock spring wasn't insert all the way.

I should post a little picture to demonstrate the correct voltage I should get at Z3

I really appreciate you documenting this so well, I plan on doing the same mod aswell. Do you have any tips or tricks for trimming the air bag cover?

Thanks, I just use a small blade that come 3 dollars a pack of 10 pcs and a 800 grit wet sand paper to make the smooth finish.
you might need a hand file the metal bracket coroner at the back of air bag module so you can press the horn in multiple directions. It seems the metal bracket is rubbing the switch. It only happens if you pivoting the horn pad in an offset position ( 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock), otherwise it should not be an issue if you press the horn at the 6 o clock position.

I registered just to tell you how grateful I am that you posted that Delphi pin diagram. I've been scouring the internet for days and contacting various companies to get some useful info, and finally I stumbled across your post and there it is. Thank you!

You are welcome. I remember even my dealership's service adviser gave me a super run around for asking a wiring diagram. lucky Delphi my request for this diagram.

My next big thing is installing aftermarket fog light with oem multifunctional switch. This will happen in summer this year.
