fuel pump assembly

The past few weeks My '05 base model Vibe has been taking a few seconds of cranking to start, but has always started, so I didn't worry too much about it. This past Friday my CEL finally came on, went to AutoZone and was told that it's a P0171 code. It seemed safe to drive home. Saturday morning the car died on my way home from an errand. We've tried cleaning the MAF sensor as suggested on a previous thread on this site. No luck. We even replaced the MAF sensor, no luck. Spent several hours trying to diagnose ourselves and we think we've determined that the fuel pump needs to be replaced. I purchased the fuel pump and strainer from AutoZone this evening and compared it to what was pulled from the vehicle, it's clearly not the same part. Is it possible that the previous owner (or his mechanic) put the wrong one in and the car was still able to function? Any suggestions?

Does the replacement fuel pump fit and hook up to the housing, strainer as well?
