Clutch feels better *before* the engine gets too warm

I have an 05 5 speed with about 50k miles. I notice that the clutch engages and disengages much more smoothly for the first while after startup. That is later on in the drive, I must be more careful when releasing the clutch going from 1st to 2nd. Does that make sense? Is it possible that this could be the consequence of having too much fluid in the hydraulic clutch/brake master cylinder reservoir? Should it be at the min mark when the car is completely cold...say after sitting all night?
