To put it briefly: Both are 100% Toyota. The 1zz is the engine in the base and AWD Vibes from '03-'08. A 2ZZ is a different beast entirely, the most significant difference being the valve lift feature and much higher output (horsepower-wise.) That engine was exclusive to the GT model which I believe was dropped after '06 or so.I think we've had people blow up both types of engines at one point or another.

However GM did offer a super charger upgrade kit for the base model 1zz enginesThe GTs never had a factory super charger kit available

If you put in a 2zz you will also need the ecu. I think some have found that the base 5speed will bolt up to the 2zz. I don't think the 2zz will bolt up to the automatic.

yeah the gt never had a supercharger. it was tuned differently, and put out about 170hp or so, same engine pretty much as in the lotus elise.the base engine with supercharger was boosted from about 130 to about 150hp. but like the guys said here, gt never was supercharged.

IIRC the 2ZZ was high compression and also required premium fuel...

1zz auto stock would not be able to have a 2zz swapped in unless you put a manual tranny in as well. Make sure to get a 1zz from a corolla, matrix, vibe or celica.

Does anyone know?I have heard of switches between the 5- and 6-speed manuals, so those do seem to be compatible with both engines.Certainly easiest to replace an existing 1zz with the same engine type.
