Wish I still had my 02 sunfire, I could go o ut there and poke and prod and figure it out myself...Sadly, though, I can't! Good luck though! If you do take it in to be changed, I can't see them charging a heck of a lot to screw in a light bulb...But then again, how many GM service techs does it take to screw in a light bulb? The world may never know!

I'm sure its just a peanut bulb that needs to be changed. Its been a while since I have taken one of those apart, but I'm sure there are just a couple of bolts inside at the bottom of the console. You'll probably have to take out some sort of pad at the bottom. There should be screws or bolts at the front also, perhaps in the cup holders. I'm not positive though, like I said, its been a while.

If worse comes to worse my old 1983 ford T-Bird had that problem and Icould never find the light so I counted shifts from park and just got used to it after that anymore i dont even look at the gears from park one shift reverse, next shift nuetral, next shift drive. Dont know if this will help or not so good luck man.

You will probably have to remove the shifter lever, the part you grab to shift it. And then remove the center console. The screws to remove the console are under round plugs and exposed screws throught the console. I used to write the serv manuls for these cars but it has been a long time...Like this...
