Hey Keely..........seems to me that silverawd26 is a little jealous that the Flames booted his team out of the playoffs. Oh well.....it just was not Detroit's time. They are a strong team and have proven that before by winning the Cup. But this year they just did not have the drive of years past. Same with Colorado. Same with NJ. Same with all the other teams that have been eliminated. Calgary has always had the talent they just needed the time to gel together.......and now they have and they are proving that in a big way.

Of course, Y's a big shot in the NHLPA and that could be pre-negotiation posturing, but that's a strong statement nonetheless.Bottom line is that I think we'd better enjoy these playoffs as it could be a long while after before we see more hockey.

Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Folks watching the game and Satellite Hot Stove on how Cherry ripped into that guy? (Sigh) Okay, I'll start off easy. First of all, Don Cherry and Ron MacLean host Coaches' Corner. The Satellite Hotstove involves Ron and three other media guys from three other Canadian cities, usually John Davidson in Ottawa, Al Stratton in Toronto and Eric Duhatchek (sp?) here in Calgary. Welcome to Hockey Night in Canada.
Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »What was up with that Spear Ville gave to Rob Davison and then trying to take a run at Dampouse? I am so glad he put his elbow up! Didn't see the spear, but if you're going to point out every little push and shove the guys give each other on the ice, it's going to be a long night.
Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »AK really did not show off on that EN Goal because he had to stop because there were 2 late players coming and even if Kipper was in net, he would of scored anyways because he was left alone big time!It was a great game, hope Iginla does not get a game suspension for talking back to the ref's. Ronnie W was fired up too!!!!!!!!What is up with the fan8s throwing trash on the ice at the Sharks, that is not really too civil or nice of them.Let's see. First of all, that was classic empty-net hotdogging by Korolyuk, exacerbated by his glorious trip of Iginla that went unpenalized just a few seconds before, the second of the period at that. It's not whether he was or was not going to score - it's how he put the puck in the net. "He had to stop because there were 2 late players coming"? What, are you on drugs? When the net's empty, you shoot it. He deliberately waited until Regher and his check had come into the play, crossed the line of the goal and practically shot the puck at Regher. Get real.As a high-level official of another type of hockey, I can tell you that if I have a usually good-tempered player, particularly the team captain, going off like that because of a (or in this case, several) missed call(s) I'm going to take note of it. Good referees ignore the constant beaking, but when you have someone of Iginla's stature and usual restraint going nuts - you realize that things have gone really wrong somehwere and you screwed up. I don't say this often, but the game was poorly officiated and it showed by the fact that both teams were furious at the end of the game. They lost the respect of the players and clearly lost control, so everything fell apart. And whoever that joker was that tossed his gloves off with Simon and then turtled - he may have earned the instigator penalty for Simon (no surprise there, Simon's got a "RESERVED" sign above the bench in the penalty box thanks the to merciless pursuit by the officials in each and every game in this series), but in the long run it will hurt their team's pride. There's no doubt whatsoever who's got the physical edge in this series, and Game 4 will be an (removed)-kicking.Don't you dare get on a soap box about Flames fans throwing a little debris after the game - it was certainly directed at the officials, not the San Jose players. That's a Canadian hockey tradition. Want to talk about classy fans? How about San Jose fans booing their home team at the end of the first period of Game 2 when their team was only down 2-0? And when they failed to score on a power play in the second after they had already cut the lead to 2-1, the fans booed them again? No kidding Sa8n Jose came to play tonight, if I were them I'd be begging to get on the road and away from the Shark Tank where it seems they're more interested in eating their own than being the 7th man.I'm going to bed now - if you'd like to throw any more comments about the game I'll address them in the morning.
Whatever happened to "It's Just A Game"??? Granted I am a big fan of hockey....always have been....I just do not see the need to decifer every inch of the game down to little details. Yes there are penalties that should have been called and others that shouldn't...but that happens all the time. Part of the game. Why not just try one time sitting back, and enjoying the game unfolding in front of you instead of picking apart the game piece by piece. But hey....that is just my 2 cents.

Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »If he shot the puck, it would of hit the 2 trailers players tied up, it could happen. So I take it as he stopped and put it in to end the game since Alan Mccauly (spelling) hit the post on an attempt earlier.Watch the replay again. He could have shot it far earlier than that. That's my point. Oh - and the game was ALREADY 2-0 at that point after another empty-net goal - the one that you're allowed to cheer at scoring.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »And it is playoff hockey, the ref's are not going to make every call, even on a trip, clutching and grabbing, it is playoff hockey. So you say that, and then you go on again like this....Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »But Ville running at 2 goalies within 3 weeks, almost a charging call could of bene called on him if Dampouse (spelling again?) did not put his elbow up to protect himself. And then a cross check against Cheechoo when he was laying on the ice. The puck would of been called dead because it was either going to be froze or a hand pass. And then the spear earlier, just too much. ...Please. When the goalie's been run, we've taken the penalties. We took three in the Detroit series and Niemenen got suspended for a game, remember? That was appropriately penalized. Last night, Niemenen hit Nabakov once after being tripped up. You're confusing the hit :20 into Game 2 after Nilsson scored as also occuring last night. As for Cheechoo, I believe it was Clark that was down on the ice and did the glove pass, then Cheechoo cross-checked him in the face first while Clark was laying on his back and unable to defend himself. So he got his in retaliation. Or how about a goal-mouth scrum after Nabakov freezes the puck where Clark get pushed on top of Nabakov by Thornton, and Thornton then punched Clark in the back of the head several times in a row - so BOTH of them get sent off for roughing? Or how about when Recchi tripped Conroy in clear view in the middle of the ice in the defensive zone, high-sticks him in the face for good measure and NOTHING was called? (I would have loved to see how the officials could have sorted that one out if Ricci had recoverd his ill-gotten gains and scored on the play.) Missed or wrong calls, but nothing to write home (or on Genvibe) about. The problem you're getting yourself into is that you're talking about relatively minor offences - nothing that is penalized in the playoffs, didn't result in any injuries and didn't change the result of the game - it went back and forth all night EVENLY as both teams took shots at each other. That's not "too much", that's playoff hockey.Sorry to belabour the point DJ, but Rob, if you're going to make posts on a thread entitled "go FLAMES go!!!" describing minor incidents, take them out of context of a game so as to portray them inaccurately, and gee, each incident is where Calgary was the wrong-doer, you're going to hear about it.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »I figure fans would not throw anything anymore because it can be a delay of game penalty for the home team ... My concern and opinion was not stating about how "classy" the fans are, but I used the words "nice and civil" as meaning to the safety of players referring back to the "beer bottle" incident."Nice" and "civil" are clearly more analogous to "classy" than "safety-minded", so I'm sure to can understand me taking umbrage at your choice of words. If you were trying to focus on the danger aspect, choose your words accordingly. Regardless, the few fans that did throw debris, which was a low number of them, did so when Calgary had just been awarded two extra penalties after the Korolyuk goal (Iginla for unsportsmanlike conduct and Simon for instigating). The Flames were already down 2, the referees weren't going to call yet another penalty for delay of game. Of course, the majority of the small amount of debris came down after the game was over. And it looked to me like it was all plastic cups. So what's your point again?Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Also, was it Edmonton or Calgary and what teams coach who ripped off the tongue of that mascot a year or 2 ago? And what fans poured beer on a couple of the guys in the penalty box a few years back?Craig MacTavish, coach of the Edmonton Oilers, ripped out Flames' mascot Harvey the Hound's tongue during a Flames' home game. It turned out to be a rather fun incident, a mere blip on the radar screen of a long and extremely intense rivarly between these two teams. I don't know what fans poured beer on players sitting in the penalty box - clearly you're implying it happened in our building. Can it - I don't like this tangent you're moving on. Your comments on the "niceness", "civility", "safety-mindedness" or "class" of the Flames' fans are pointless and unwanted. You started all this dissection of the game and pointing a finger at the Flames fan - and I'd like to end it now.
Wow, what a great game so far tonight (2nd intermission currently). Both JC and I were at Game 4 at the Dome, and although it was disappointing that the Flames didn't come out with their usual spark and Kipper had a tough game, you could feel in the building that none of the fans were dejected or depressed. After all, with a 7-2 record on the road in the postseason, they had to be confident going to the Boo Tank for this game!My favorite moments from Game #4: being on my feet and cheering for 15 minutes straight before the game's even started, and the fan cam spotting a father with his 2 year-old son on his shoulders who just happened to have a lovely mop of curly red hair - and his parents had painted a red beard on him - clearly a Commodore love child!
what a great game! shut out!!!! on their home turf too! even better. man, i was getting worried though. if they'd lost this one, i think it'd have been over!
Sorry about your sister, I hope she's okay.I won't even respond to the "prediction" that you don't back up with any details - after all, you've got a coin's-toss chance of being correct.Flames in 6 over San Jose - they will get over the home jinx (but just barely, it will be an overtime victory) by continuing to work the forecheck (the single determining factor of each game in this series, which was won by who forechecked better than the other). Philadelphia in 7 over Tampa Bay as the bigger physical presence of the Flyers wears down the quicker but much smaller Lightning defence.Flames vs. Flyers - 7 epic games, lots of injuries and suspensions as both teams play brutally physical hockey. The result will be determined by the winner of the goaltender's battle. Too early to call!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!What did I say? FLAMES IN SIX!!!!(removed), this is incredible. JC was at the game, my MM and that fine looking fellow with me in the picture below was there with him (JC got the tickets for us) - I can only imagine how awesome it was.Three divisional champions down: ONE STANLEY CUP TO GO!

Don't worry Rob, I'm sure that Roch knows the difference between the World Cup of Hockey and the Stanley Cup playoffs. What he was referring to is the fact that a Canadian team hasn't won the cup since Montreal in 1993 and it would be nice to bring it back to Canada.
Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Just making sure Keely. But if the Cup goes back to Canada, it belongs to Calgary, no one else. The players, city/fans are the owners. That is like me saying bring the Cup back to the Western Conference. And that's why you're American, and you just don't understand why someone from Quebec would be cheering for the Flames. This is what it is to be Canadian.

Just to follow up with a bit of empirical proof of the fact that the Flames are now Canada's team, how about a phone call from Prime Minister Paul Martin last night after the game?
Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Can not pick and choose what you are when it suits your needs and I do understand Keely, more than 1 person can see it.I have no idea what this sentence means.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »I do not see Americans cheering when an American team wins the Stanley Cup if or when a Canadian team loses. I just do not see it as reasonable or fair. The reason that you don't see it as "reasonable or fair" - of course, fairness not being a valid issue since there's nothing inherently "unfair" about Canadians that are rooting for the Flames if they don't live in Calgary - is that you're not Canadian, like I said before. That's fine! We don't mind that at all. Hockey is different for us, that's all. It's our de facto national sport, practically the air we breathe. Even when the Habs played the Bruins, you can even ask Vibe Rater and ArcsVibe. I am a big Leafs/Habs fan. This is absolutely irrelevant to the issue of whether it's "reasonable or fair" for Canadian hockey fans to be excited that the Stanley Cup might return to Canada. Or are you saying it's even more unreasonble and more unfair that you, who live in a different country than Montreal and Toronto, never mind another city, cheer for their teams? I'm completely mystified at your logic here.silver, you're obviously frustrated at posts that have appeared on other threads in other areas of Genvibe and you've brought that over to this thread, which, up until you put forward this political element, has been a good hockey discussion interspersed with unbridled cheering There's a very good reason why I don't visit forums like "Off Topic" - so don't bring the problems that appear elsewhere into our forum. You seemed to take offence at Salsa!'s comments that all of Canada is excited about the Flames, and frankly, that's unreasonable.I'm glad you're going to drop it - you've brought a lot of needless negativity here.
I thought you were going to drop it?Clearly, you have a different perspective on hockey than we do. Again, I repeat myself since it didn't work the first time, there's nothing wrong with that. Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »I did not know the NHL was USA vs Canada and if it is: I might have to stop watching the sport and supporting the NHL and their charities since it seems the Teams and Fans are seperated by nationalities. I once thought that is what made the NHL so great, so many different creeds of people playing on 1 roster as a team and competing for one goal. Might be time to hang up my skates and never look back. If this is the first time you've noticed nationalistic hockey sentiments between Canada and the US within the NHL and this is going to make you "hang up your skates", I again repeat that you obviously have a completely different perspective on the sport than a huge majority of Canadians do. If that difference threatens or offends you so much that you no longer want to be a fan, well, there's not much I can say to that. The interplay between Canadian patriotism (no, not an oxymoron) and hockey is no news flash to any Canadian hockey fan, particularly those interested enough to read this thread. AGAIN, this is not anti-American sentiment in any way shape or form - without American teams, American fans and American dollars, there would likely be no NHL, and we'd be missing great competitive opponents at world events like the Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey. But asking a Canadian hockey fan to separate their nationality from their national sport on any level of competition is like asking a Brazilian football fan to forget that they're Brazilian when they watch Ronaldo play for whatever pro team he's on at the moment.I have to repeat myself again and say that I'm not upset by this or anything else you've said here. I challenge your posts on this thread because the opinions you express are logically inconsistent and don't respond to the rebuttals I put forth. You're on our local forum and talking about something very near and dear to our hearts - our hockey team and our sport - so I'm not going to drop it until you cry "Uncle" (again).
ok, all you hockey techs, step aside.....FLAMES ARE GOING TO THE CUP!!!! i only got to watch the last 10 min of the game, but boy was it a great 10 mins! they played awesome! and that empty net goal??? now that was funny!
Quote, originally posted by trdvibe »... and that empty net goal??? now that was funny!Indeed, couldn't have happened to a nicer guy in Korolyuk.Looking forward to pre-scouting the opposition tonight on HNC. Game 6 in that series was quite entertaining with all the odd goals and such, but I predict tonight will be a very low-scoring, tight-checking affair with few quality goal scoring opportunities. Game 7s inevitably make one of the two goaltenders into goats, and I don't like Philly's chances keeping Esche (whoops, mispelled that at first!) from stepping into that role on their behalf.Prediction: Tampa 2-1 in overtime, Richards the goalscorer.
