Center lane riding isn't an end all, be all. Sometimes it makes sense, sometime it doesn't. My issue is only with those that think that anyone that is not speeding should be in the furthest right hand lane at all times. That type of driving just isn't smart and it makes it harder for those getting on and off the freeway. As a speed limit driver, I do not feel I have the right to clog the "high speed" lane. I'm always willing to split the lanes between us slowpokes and the speed demons, but it is unfair to think that those that drive the speed limit should be relegated to less than half of the highway. My commute is mostly highway in rush hour traffic. My front brakes on my cars usually last in the neighborhood of 100,000 miles. This is because I usually drive just to the left of the curb lane, and that way I don't have the constant slow down and speed up (with tapping the brakes) that you get when you are either riding in the right hand lane letting drivers on and off, or weaving in and out of traffic by speeding. It's a really relaxing way to drive.

My issue is, screw the speed limit, IF you are in the way of the flow of traffic causing people to have to split and pass you left and right, Move to the far Right hand lane, you are an obstruction to traffic, no matter how you feel about speeders.Sure, you may be technically correct but in a practical application you are a road hazard.Dave

If everyone is in the right lane when there are on-ramps and no space for vehicles to merge into traffic... Issues occur...

Agreed, As I noted in my epistle on the GSP. I mean once out of the city and into miles of empty (or relatively empty) highway where exits are few and far between and people continue to ride the Center lane no matter what. That is what I fail to understand. The why of that behavior.Dave

A merge lane message from the State with the worst merge lanes I've ever seen!! (I lived there for almost 20 years). They either get tighter and tighter and tighter the closer you get to the highway where you want to be up to speed but must slow down to stay on the road. (I call it the Ooops design, "we're not going to make the merge at this radius boss." "Well just tighten it up as you need to then!") OR.....They are about 10 feet long and MAY have a STOP sign at the end of it!!!!!(can you say Lancaster?)Dave

lol I grew up in jersey i'm a PA transplant from 20years back. So i know how to drive in both states. lolI agree NOBODY in PA knows what a merge ramp is for. But in their def. nobody ever taught them. It's not a requirement, and neither is parallel parking a requirement to get a license in this state. At least it wasn't when I got my license 20 years ago.

Wheyn my youngest went, I never taught her squat about Parallel parking, pulled up to Honesdale, got our info in, and sat waiting for her test I noticed cones and people being test for it!!I quickly took my daughter over to a dirt spot and with rocks and sticks showed her the principle of parallel parking. She said OK, the test happened and wouldn't you know she nailed that technique on the first try during her test! Whatta Kid I tell you, or a really good explanation of the procedure was done by me.I may also be the ONLY person living in NJ that moved FROM Pennsylvania!! I too am a Native of NJ but left back in the 70's for several different greener pastures only to be lured back by a really good job offer 5 years ago.Living in the Mendham area isn't a bad deal at all, Faux Rural, spacious home placement, it ain't a slum I'll tell you that! and yet all the conveniences of living in a more urban area.Dave

I'll be in Pennsyl-tucky in a few weeks for Thanksgiving. My view on the lanes is this. Left lane is obviously passing and faster driving. Middle lane is for average speed people, and far right is for slow people, overly cautious drivers, merging/exiting, etc.In CT we have areas where the 3 lanes are deemed for passing, traveling, and slow vehicles/trucks. We even provide the extra slow lane for semi-trucks going uphill around here. The left lane in CT is not for people doing anything less thant 70-75 on average. You will have the 75-80+ crowd but generally 70-75 puts you there. The 60-65 ers can hang in the middle lane, and anything 60 and under are ok for the far right. That is the unspoken rule in CT, oh and we hate outsiders. Colorado, Mass, Virginia, Maryland. These people should just stay to the right ALL the time. Just because in Virginia your cops are way way sickening with radar traps and speeding (note DO NOT EVER SPEED IN VIRGINIA). Does not mean you can come up here and drive 60 in the fast lane and everything will be OK, move! NY'ers I don't mind, they drive like us and I love it. NJ gets a free pass too, they usually obey the rules for the left lane also.

Fun times! They picked on any Northern Plate.Dave
