Figured I would start a topic on this subject. You know the people, here are the cases:1) People who don't check their mirrors. Their out there, and they are not looking around as they should. I constantly check all my mirrors, behind to ensure no one is coming up, my sides to ensure nobody is in the lane I want to go into or if I need a quick lane change manuever. These types just don't care, they are oblivious to their surroundings and when you pass them on the right, they look over in amazement like you appeared from thin air when you have been behind them for the last 5 miles.2) Deputized drivers. These folks seem to think they drive Crown Vics with light bars, and for that reason you WILL go their speed and they don't care. They will even give you the arm wave up and down of "slow down" as you edge closer to their bumper. Yet regardless they will not budge, you can go around when the time is right but they would rather you make moves and jump lanes to get around them in hazard than be safe for all and just move over. And typically you are not alone, there are usually more than just yourself waiting to get past. I have seen this person sit there while a group of 3 or 5 cars goes around them on the right, and they still sit there.3) The fast and slow. The person who goes 60, and when you appear behind him stays at 60, won't move over even after a courtesy flash. But try to pass them on the right and no your not standing still, they are accelerating. 70...80mph trying to make sure you stay behind them. If you don't make it and drop back behind, they slow back to 60 again. If you do make it buy you get a horn honk, a light flash, a constant high beam. Apparently they are never satisfied.4) Take your timers are fun. You are coming down the highway, they sit, you are still coming, they sit. Finally you are on top of them, suddenly their blinker goes on and they start the slow progression to change lanes. But it's too late, you've already hit your brakes, slowed down, and are now wasting more fuel to get up to speed instead of them taking notice (see #1) and moving over when appropriate to avoid the decel and accel. The best is when you move to pass on the right and they try to move to the right to get out of your way. At this point they have already missed the window and need to just stay where they are. It is frustrating, but it is also about timing. Again constantly checking mirrors I can tell when someone is coming up and approximate how quickly they will be upon me and when the right time to move is so they can without slow down drive by me and I can get back over again. I don't try to be the hero to get 1 more car up before I move over, just find the appropriate spot and move. Now that being said, I will be appeasing to people who have nowhere to go. I will slow down and slowly inch up on them so they know I still want to pass. 5) The I'm a new driver jumper. New or not, mostly not, these people sit in the line of moving vehicles you are in (light traffic), and every opportunity they get, jump over, mash the gas and try to get one car up. Whether there is space or not, they have poor judgement, poor distance skills, and poorer driving. They try to squeeze in and cause us all to brake. I hate that guy. Which is why when I see them jumping over to pass, I inch up to the guy in front of me while at the same time making sure the guy behind me can lock him out too. It's a fun little toss back and forth to keep him where he is if not lose a spot or two, that is pretty satisfying when it happens.6) The I'll leave 15 cars in front of me guy. You wonder why traffic is so slow, then see it. 6 cars up the guy is doing 30, traffic is moving at 40-50 and slowing occasionally. And when it slows and he sees brake lights on the horizon miles away, he lets off the gas, coasts or even brakes. If he just kept pace then we would all enjoy a shorter commute and less brake wear and fuel waste. I once had a guy come to a complete stop a good 10 cars from the next guy in front of him, he caused a 3 car pile up, luckily I jumped lanes and avoided. You may read this and think I have a lot of anger, lol. I don't, I just see A LOT when I drive my 50-80 mile commute each day spending 2 hours in the car watching people. My own ways of driving have certain rules tied to them though:1) Never get into a lane unless I can see the headlights of the car in my rearview mirror. Forget the sides and a quick look (which I always do in unison). If the cars headlights are in my mirror I not only have room, but room to spare. I don't like to be the cutoff guy jumping in and hitting my brakes, I try to speedmatch when getting over and make sure the room is there.2) If the guy behind me is a jerk and freaking out about flying by people in traffic with nowhere to go, I box him. I make sure that even though there is 3 cars space in the right lane, he is not getting by. Of course within reason cause some psychos move over when there is NO room. Which you just have to let go. Trucks are my peeves, they try to squeez and muscle into the lanes sometimes. Which makes me wish they had screens on the backs so I could see in front of them.3) O/D is not just a button. It allows me to essentially drop down a gear to slow down without braking or to get the added power when I need to pass or get up to speed. I use mine constantly each day.4) You go I go. HUGE believer. When merging, when yielding to on ramps or traffic lane changers to get to an exit. I don't like the people who sneak in or keep driving down the on ramp to get one more car up. They are the reason traffic starts. And for that matter, so are the people already on the highway not letting people merge in. Same goes for construction. If everyone adopted you-go-I-go then it would flow. 5) When in traffic, chill. Put on the radio, relax, pop a window, make a call. Traffic cannot be beaten, you just need to go with it. Sure some lanes at some areas move faster and I fully utilize this to keep myself moving. But bottom line, don't get mad, when you get to the gym later, take your frustration out there.
I completely agree......You should try driving in Florida, people just don't know when to be in the left lane. It shows when someone passes me on the right when I'm in the middle lane and the left lane is open.I couldn't agree more with the I go, you go merging idea, I hate those people who don't let anyone in or try to use the grass to pass people... motorcycles are the worst at this.

I've found that on a 3 lane highway the far RIGHT lane has become the new fast lane. So many IDIOTS, including trucks now!! ride the center lane.I ask WHY?For those of you reading this who ride the center lane, please let us know why you do this, it is illegal, makes people pass on your right, causes unspeakable grief to those behind you as you putz along. I'm sure you have a reason, help us understand the why of it.What gets me, is that States are crying poor, bankrupt, need money. If they restructure the highway fines to become PAINFUL, not a measly $100 or so, I'm talking $800, $900 for cars and $1000's for trucks, and then start enforcing the laws we have on the books. This would end up being a self imposed tax, like smoking is. You smoke, you choose to pay taxes. You break a highway law, you choose to pay the fines.Every center lane rider should be ticketed, no question about it. Gee, I could go on and on and on, but I won't (you should smile now)Dave

In Utah they made it illegal to allow someone to pass you on the right. It is considered obstructing the flow of traffic. I just wish it was possible to actually enforce it.

Everyone of those cars doing 80 should be stopped and slapped with a very very painful fine, a self imposed tax. The only thing that keeps them on the books is they are mostly ignored.

If they enforced the passing and obstructing traffic flow laws as much as they did people speeding. We would have better flow guaranteed. They punish those who speed, why not those who obstruct and drive slow or careless. Now motorcycles I give a pass to sorta. My highway on the way to and from work is 2 lanes. So when traffic is built up the bikers cruise up the middle. I am fine with this and even make an effort to move slightly to give them room. But the ones who fly by at 60 while we are doing 5 is not cool. I wish I could open my door once.Let's add to the list.7) Breakdown lane drivers. Not just the ones who keep going when the on ramp is clearly gone. But the guys who want to get to that exit right up there and are too impatient. Or the ones who just cruise it to get ahead. I am always pushing my car to the right to block those people. I almost got rearended once from a guy flying up the breakdown.8) Emergency vehicle users. Not the ambulances themselves, but the guys who feel the need to follow in their wake when people are pulled over. Nothing else to add here, it's just sickening to me.9) Ramp passers. Not the guy getting one ahead when getting on a highway and not merging. The guy who cuts over a lane or two, jumps on the on ramp or exit ramp and plows up to get ahead. I really cannot stand those people. 10) Mr. or Mrs. I need to be in that lane so I will stop until someone lets me in. OH MY GOD! Keep moving with the flow, turn your signal on and eventually someone will let you in. And if they don't, do the creep manuever and slowly let your wheel walk into the lane until someont slows down enough. This happens in traffic all the time. They sit there and wait holding up an entire lane, it's idiocracy at it's finest. They might as well be at a stop sign in their neighborhood.11) Good Luck Everybody! Ever see Family Guy where the asian driver flies over a few lanes without looking. Nothing against the asians (stereotype already existed), but anyone in general who not just flies across lanes at will, but will slam on their brakes or make stupid lane changes when they are about to miss an exit or an interchange.12) Jet powered SUVs or Trucks. I'm not sure about anyone else, but for me when I drive an SUV like my gf's Jeep or something similar, I get to 70-75 and feel like I'm flying. I rarely go any faster in that car. So how is it that these guys in Tahoe's, F-150's, and the like feel free to do 80, 90+. I gotta believe that they at that point couldn't pull an evasive if they tried without rolling. Stick to your proper speed.

Anyone ever drive the Auto Bahn in Germany? If so, tell people how that highway works. A Right lane or center lane rider would get killed or pushed off the highway in a hurry!
I try not to get to upset anymore about drivers. why?1. you yell at a window, the guy your yelling at could care less about you2. all of a sudden your the one not in control, and its you that makes the dumb mistake.3. your blood pressure goes up. health wise that can't be good.4. and its much easier to just mind your own. drive defensively and arrive at your destination safely.remember what goes around...that other guy will get his, sometime. and if your in such a hurry you have to give someone a "courtesy flash" leave earlier. P.S. lets not forget that gun that the other driver might be carrying

Some German rules:-18 to drive a car-License costs the equivalent of $1,200 (probably more nowadays)-Keep Right EXCEPT to pass is STRICTLY ENFORCED. You can get a HUGE fine for not following the rule.I watched the History Channel Autobahn show and it was nuts. They took a yellow RUF (modified Porsche) and drove it 215mph at night.

Left lane hogs are everywhere, and yes I agree, they totally suck. However, I disagree with some people here who are saying you should stay in the far right lane except to pass (and I'm kind of glad that just doesn't happen where I come from). If you are driving at or above the speed limit, you are usually passing a fair number of slower drivers, and people many people merging on and off the highway (especially moving through a city). You will spend way more time hitting the brakes, way more time changing lanes, and thus impede more traffic by doing so. If you are driving the speed limit in the right lane and catch up to two side by side cars, you now have to cross two lanes to your left to pass. Good luck with that.

I'm not quite sure if I've posted this here or on other forums but I'll say it again: Only on our roads are the law abiding citizens expected to yield to law breaking citizens. If you are driving the posted speed limit, there is nothing wrong with driving in the center lane. Why should the law abiding driver be forced to constantly change lanes to make way for the drivers that are driving over the speed limit. Why should I be the one forced to make room for those entering and exiting the highway by riding in the right hand land so that speeders can have 2 unobstucted lanes to break the law? I agree with joatmon; on a 3 lane road, the right hand lane is for entering and exiting the highway. It makes it safer for those who have to get on and get off. I'm not turning so why should I have to change lanes? If you want to speed, wait your turn and pass on the left. If there is no speed limit or only 2 lanes, then the slower cars should be on the right. There is a speed limit. If you want to break it, don't ask me to help you do it.

It does not.I'm not driving slower than traffic, though I may be driving slower than you. The only time you have to drive in the furthest right hand lane is when there are 2 lanes or less going in the same direction (4 lane highway). Note this rule that you posted"• On a roadway divided into three lanes, a vehicle shall not be driven inthe center lane except where that center lane is devoted exclusively totraffic moving in the direction the driver is proceeding."On a 6 lane highway (3 each direction) the center lane is designated to go the same direction. This rule is under the heading of :"Multiple Lane RoadsWhen a road has been divided into four or more marked lanes, or wheretraffic within municipalities is lawfully moving in two or more continuous linesin the same direction" You posted it above. Thanks for proving my point.

So, we have the Ohio State Drivers manual stating that you cannot run the center lane and we have a Massachusetts Institute of Technology publication saying you can...hmmmmm I think I'll believe the State publication over some paper put together by college students.dave

But the center lane is fair game as long as you are driving the speed limit. You speeders can't have the whole road....lol

I am wearying of this but you misread the law. That statement means if you are on a 3 lane highway and it is splitting up ahead with two lanes going left, two lanes going right and you want to go to the left, get into the center lane, it is dedicated to your direction of travel. The center lane in this situation goes both directions.Dave

The law clearly states that you must be on the right half of the road. The way you state the law would mean that if it's a 10 lane highway, only those who are actively passing someone can use the other 4 lanes. The only lane that is absolutely, designated for passing is the furthest left hand lane.

It's saying the highway is made up of three lanes... one lane going one way and another lane going the opposite, the center lane is a turning lane also known as a suicide lane. The law is saying you're not allowed to drive along in the center lane.

I've seen them, every single one that you described. And weather I'm driving to work or across the province the simplest solution I've found, leave earlier and give yourself extra time. Be it 5 minutes or a few hours. If I leave 5 minutes early for the daily commute I find that the retards and slowpokes don't bother me nearly as much as when I leave at the regular time. That being said.... I really hate the tailgaters who just HAVE to get to the front and once they get there, now that all the supposed retards are behind them, they pull into the right lane and SLOW DOWN. The good ol' pass and slow, IMO the reason roadrage was invented.
It's not really valid to argue that people doing the speed limit in other than the right most lane should be ticketed because they prevent other people from speeding. It may be frustrating, (actually, no "may" about it) but if they are doing the maximum speed allowed by law, you've got no case if by doing so, they keep you from breaking different laws.but traffic laws aside, it is inconsiderate for people to block the passing lane when it would take only token effort and no risk for them to get out of the way. Argue the extremes, but most of us here care enough about our cars to drive in a way to protect them.vent on line, the internet is good for that, but leave the anger at the keyboard, don't take it with you when you get behind the wheel. Its hard, takes deliberate effort, but try. Take it easy out there, don't let it get to you. I've no road rage, I live 100 yards from work and only run highways during pleasure trips. Most of my commutes are made in a GEM car using 12 feet of public road. Am I irritated by traffic blocking center lane riders? (and a good percentage of them are NOT even doing close to the speed limit BTW)Yes, no more so than the tailgater or traffic weaver though. They all deserve painful tickets and driving school equally.Do I speed? At times, depends upon the traffic flow and time of day. There are hours on I 80 and I 78 that if you don't speed, you could actually cause an accident! Generally I'm law abiding and defensive though.Actually my much bigger beefs lie with Truckers. The day of the "PROFESSIONAL" driver is largely gone and replaced by arrogant SOB's hauling tons of frieght. That is another topic!!!Dave
I average about 700-900 miles a week and have for years so I've seen it all at least once.I wish they would bring back the old lane use rule:Left lane for commissioned people.Right lane for hourly people. As to the center lane of 3 lanes, depending on the area, metro vs rural vs city, I generally will use the best flowing lane. In metro/city with lots of on ramps I center it to allow merging. Sometimes I drive a big truck and it is a pain to constantly move between right and center lanes. As to the right most lane becoming the fast lane, that came about because cops were picking speeders off in the left most lane.Generally, if the traffic is flowing safely at 80 then I'm there. If at 60, then I'm there to. I consider safety first in ALL of my driving decisions. With my driving experience, I could make a 2 hour video. I'm waaaay over 2 million miles.

We were talking about frustrating drivers, and you said look out, I've got a gun, so I thought you were posing as someone who would actually use a firearm to resolve a traffic inconvenience. There are people out there who will shoot you if you cut them off in traffic, glad you are not planning or claiming to be one of them.Quote, originally posted by keithvibe »we can't he was banned yeah, he last posted about three years ago, (and still has the highest post count here, although Hope is closing in on him) I know he can no longer answer here, I guess I was just referencing his experience of being asaulted and run over by a driver who went nuts over some traffic thing. Just trying to say that there are lots of frustrating things out there on the road, we all need to not let it get us into a frenzy
Ok,So last night I ran the Garden State Parkway from I 78 down to the Eatontown exit.Mind you I am now every much aware of driving patterns and center lane hoggers. It was a Saturday so very few commuters. Speed limit is rather slow for the highway South of 78. Constant entrances and exits one after another with rest areas thrown in for good measure!5 lanes of traffic heading South. The two Left lanes were obviously the excessive speeding lanes, working wonderfully. The Right lane along this stretch is basically one never ending entry exit lane so isn't practical to be a travel lane. The 2nd Right lane can be used and I did use it at times as traffic flow allowed. The limit through most of this is 50 MPH though the average speed was around 65. I found myself using mainly the Right lanes, one of them being the exact Center. I never used the far Right lane at all.So, I did as Tubaryan12 does and used the center lanes for the safety and convenience factor, it just wasn't practical to use the Right lane ever.1 point for Tubaryan 12!!As you approach 287 and the Driscoll Bridge the five lanes split, Three off to the Left to continue on your Southern Journey, Two to the Right to pick up 287/440/9/local roads. At this point you are forced to use the center lane to continue your direction of travel. The Bridge itself is oh gee, just a guess here, 8 - 10 lanes wide. The EZ Pass lanes are all to the Left so once again you must use the center block of lanes to maintain your travel unless you want to be counted among that sorry "class" of people who actually STOP and pay a toll with MONEY! I opt for the 65 MPH toll pay system.Beyond this point South the Road becomes more urban with few and farther apart exits, it is now two distinct 3 lanes traveling South Side by side, essentially two highways,(6 lanes total) and at this point I maintain a true keep Right except to pass stance.I now do 68 in a 65 in the Right Lane Zooming by all the idiots putzing along in the center lane at 55 - 65 mph. This is where my center lane riding becomes an irritation. WHY do they do this? there is absolutely no reason to run the center lane here. Exits are once every 10 miles or so. IF you take the express there are only 3 exits in the entire run. The express does narrow down to 2 lanes eventually where the irritation usually ends unless you've got granny passing fearful neurotic woman.Keep in mind there are no trucks on the GSP.So Tubaryan, you are partly correct. Though just a tiny bit.Dave
