So we found some squeeky tennis balls. He's gonna go nuts! Also got some stuffed toys, chewies and treats. Our dogs LOVE christmas and unwrapping their own gifts. One of our favorite things to do is watch them open theirs. They open theirs last cause they got carried away one year and started unwrapping everyone's. lol.

Time for an update: Zephyr is doing OK. He has his 4th chemo this coming Friday. He has lost most of the hair on the bottom side of his neck. It swells up very easily when he gets active. He is eating normally, playing somewhat normally. The swelling causes him to breathe heavier and gag a lot. The chemo is getting harder and harder on him. It is taking longer for him to recover after each treatment. Last time he didn't eat for 4-1/2 days because he didn't feel well. We have to give hime plain cooked rice to get him to start eating. Well, only one more after this one, then he'll be done. Now our other border collie, Hailey, has a tumor that needs to be removed. This one will be much easier as it is a only a fatty tumor.

sorry to hear it. I know it's hard losing a pet. My parents just lost their poodle (my dog) a week ago. She got sick and about 3 wks later was gone. We had to put her down. They were a complete mess! My dad was so incredibly depressed and my mom a wreck that we (my brothers and I) decided they should get another puppy. So after a bit of research and searching, we found a cute little 10 wk old girl in Portland and went and got her (They are in WA). she is so beautiful and looks nothing like the old dog (couldn't look like Poohbear). So, though they are sad and miss their her, they have a new puppy who needs them to concentrate on her. Losing a pet is pretty difficult. She was my dog originally and it's just so wierd not having her around. I hope all the treatments go well and they have caught everything early enough. They think the dog had liver failure and cancer of the throat. It was quick. Just didn't catch it soon enough.
I'm sorry to hear that Zephyr is having side effects from treatment. As for Hailey, I would have that tumor biopsied. They will charge you extra for the labwork, but trust me, it is SO worth the peace of mind knowing if it is or isn't cancerous. Also Pre-Op testing...I never have any procedures done to my pups (even dental cleaning) without it done first. I'm sorry to hear about Poohbear, Hope...it's really hard to lose the ones you grew up with.Hugs to all the furbabies
Update: It has been 3 weeks since Zephyr's last Chemo treatment. He had 5 of them. He is doing better than he has in months. He is eating normally, drinking normally, and is wanting to play more often. He has no hair on his neck, it's smooth as a baby's bottom. He also has a lot of brown spots on his bare skin now too. He does gag still quite a bit and his throat swells up if he is too active so we have to limit the amount of playtime he gets for a while. So after a very difficult surgery in which he lost 1/3 of his blood, 3 Radiation Treatments and 5 Chemo treatments, all we can do now is pray that all the cancer is gone and won't come back. He will be getting Xrays in a few months to see if there is anything to be concerned about.I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and support! You really helped me get thru a difficult time. I love you all! Just woke up after a nap:

Quote, originally posted by northvibe »+2! glad he is doing much better! I forgot....is there a explanation for the swelling neck?I was due to the invasive nature of the surgery. It has gone down quite a bit since, but you can see and feel that the scar tissue has made is large that before all this happened. Zephyr is doing well and his thyroid numbers are back to normal with meds that he will need to take for the rest of his life.Hailey, our other border collie had a tumor removed a couple days ago. It started out around the same time as Zephyr's, but Hailey's was all external and looked like a small skin tag at first then grew to the size of a lima bean over the course of a year. We had it cxhecked out every time we brought her in for regular check-ups and the vet said not to worry about it unless it starts to change. Well, on Wednesday of this week it ballooned to the size of a grapefruit. We brought her in and she had it removed on Thursday. We will find out early next week if it is cancerous or not. Hopefully not. We can't afford to go thru that again...

I'm hoping for a bit of good news for ya that it's not cancerous.wow her hair is really really curly. It's hot out and the cold cement floor feels sooo good! Yeah, she is curly. Not the typical Border Collie even though she is a pure bred. She is actually Zephyr's cousin. Their dad's are brothers. Hailey's dad was curly while Zephyr's dad was not.

It's been a while, so I thought I would post an update on Zephyr. The doctors only expected him to live another year or two even with the surgery, radiation and chemo. Four years later, I am happy to report he is doing awesome! He is 10-1/2yrs old now and is more active now than before his tumor was removed. Thyroid has a lot to do with energy and he has to take thyroid pills everyday to maintain proper levels. He still has no hair on his neck from the radiation. He was well worth the $ spent to make him well. He's my boy!Hailey is now 13-1/2 and is showing her age a little. Grey in the face, slow to move around, can't jump up in the car anymore. I have to have her put her front paws up and the I lift her the rest of the way up. She has vertigo and takes low dose dramamine everyday to control it. Still loves to go on walks and play ball.

The love and everything else you get in return is priceless !

I can't believe it's been four years already. I'm glad to hear your boy is doing well. Funny thing is that I was just thinking about him the other day. I meant to send you an IM and ask how he was making out. I'm happy for you. You don't even have to be a dog person to love this story. My Luna is 11 and I have to lift her into the back of the Vibe now. She weighs 95 pounds. I think she has resigned to the fact that she can no longer jump into the car. She patiently stands by the hatch and waits for me to lift her in. Gotta love those crazy pets.

It is with deep sorrow that Zephyr passed away 2 weeks ago. He Lived 3 years longer than what the doctors said he would even with the Surgery, Radiation and Chemo. I will miss my Zephyr boy!
Zephyr is on the left:
Hailey(right) is now 14, has vertigo & arthritis. She is loving all the extra attention she is getting now, that Zephyr isn't stealing the toys out of her mouth. She did search the house for him two days after he was gone.
RIP...Zephyr

Three years more... Well, you at least got that! Three more years to play with him. How are you and Hailey now? She looks like a cutie! It could be fun to meet her. Say... RiceKiller meets in Brooklyn Park on Mondays?
14 years is a good run for a puppy! I like the name Zephyr (for a dog, not a Lincoln).
