Ordered a couple of remount kits today just in case. I'll probably keep it on the back glass, just shifting everything over to the left and mounting the inside piece like I should have in the first place. lol! How much wind noise are you getting with your antennas mounted on the side windows? Curious to see how your setup does...

My antenna gives me a low pitched, metallic hum when I get above 50 or so. For wind noise, it actually sounds kinda neat! The rig you're getting looks quite cool! Waiting for the goodies to come is aggrivating, isn't it?UPS brings my ht antenna by tomorrow, and I've recently placed an order for the cigarette lighter adapter. Not sure what I'm gonna do with all that raw power of the VX2R - with DC in, it pumps out a whopping 3/2 watts for 144/440, respectively. lol (1.5/1w on battery)

It sure does, i'm going to be very disappointed if it doesnt come in before the weekend.I'm trying to make sure i have everything in place for the install.Checklist:* Heavy gage wires (red + black)* In-line fuse (looks like the add-a-fuse except you cut the cable and this crimps on in the middle, that way you use whatever gage wire you want)* Misc crimp-on connectors.* Battery saver (Little thing that hooks between the battery and the radio and will cut the power if it drops below 11V, that way i wont be able to drain the battery..)* Tools (you can't complete a new project without buying a new tool.. )* Batteries for the digital camera.* Refreshments (Smirnoff Ice in this case.. to be used *after* the install is done, dont want to mess anything up)Quote, originally posted by ColonelPanic »UPS brings my ht antenna by tomorrow, and I've recently placed an order for the cigarette lighter adapter. I got the pocket-size repeater directory and my DC adapter delivered today... The antenna came in yesterday, man that thing's big. Helps reception around the house, but the length of the antenna makes it kinda impractical to use elsewhere. I'll get a pic of that thing, it looks funny screwed onto the top of the tiny Yaesu. lolThe extra little bit of power the DC adapter provides does make somewhat of a difference. One of these days, I'll upgrade to something bigger and better, but it's alright for now.Any news on the rig?

this sucks.. as soon as i finished that last message i received an email from gigaparts saying that kenwood has pushed the deliver to 7/31.. i may see if i can order it from someone else or go up to the IC-706MKIIG instead.. i've been thinking about going with that one since it has HF as well.. but that'd add atleast $150..

That does suck! The Kenwood looks like a nice rig. I just checked out the Icom, that thing is sweet - but whatta pricetag! I wonder what the holdup is on the Kenwood, anyway?

It is very tempting.. Pricetag sucks thou.. but even if i got the kenwood i dont think i'd be getting any new gadgets for a while.. so if i can push limit to the 706 then i may go for it..Supposedly they are very popular.. the only problem with getting the 706 is that i was thinking that i could use the two kenwoods together.. oh well..i still havent decided yet.. if i decide to go with the 706 it'll ship tomorrow..

Yeah, that's a tough call. Quite a chunk of change to throw down on a radio, but then again... If you'll get a lot of use out of the rig, it may be worth it to you to spend the extra cash. With that kind of money, better get what you want now! Good luck with your decision, it's a tough one.

I have decided to go ahead and get it. With the extra gadgets i was looking to add to the d700 im "only" adding $200.. still a lot, but since i probably wont be getting any new radios for a while i think i'll go with one that will do HF so that i wont have to invest in one later. The only bad thing is that i was looking forward to playing with APRS in the car.. and that the d700 is a dual receiever, but i guess you cant have everything.. oh well.I visited the local club on the field day and i think HF will be interesting.. Now i have to go study for my general test edit: So does this mean that i'll be hamsexy ?

I myself have considered getting one since I too and studying for the General license. But I really don't have the $$ right now for it. Although, for the price it has a lot of features in a small package. Besides, there are SO many choices of radios you can get these days, I really don't know what I want next.....btw... interesting website, how did you find that one??? 73!

Its here Now all i have to do is figure out where to mount the remote head.. The base will go under the driver's seat but i have five or six different ideas on where to put the head..The biggest obsticle i see (besides where to mount the head) is the firewall, other than that i dont think it'll be hard to get it set up. I already have the antenna ran. This is going to be a good weekend. Got my callsign and my radio Like the gigaparts rep said: New toys are the spice of life

Hot goes straight to the battery, ground goes to chassi.I may extend the ground straight to the battery later on but for now it'll do.Oh, and i also need to get some fuses close to the battery. Both cables are fused close to the unit, but i should probably have some close to the battery.

Last one. The head unit is sitting between the two seats. It fits perfectly in there and wont move around. The problem is that you can't look at it while you are driving but it will be ok until i figure out where i want the head.Time to break out those smirnof ice bottles and read the manual (gasp, yes i'm really going to read the manual )Over all i've very happy with the install, it except for the power cable being a couple of inchec short everything went pretty smooth.

Wow, I sure did miss a lot last night! Congrats, and looking good there! You, my friend, have had a much better week than I! Good job on the setup! I figured finding a good spot to mount the control head would be a challenge. Looks good where you've got it.For the resetting issue, if you're connected directly to the battery and it still shuts off when starting... Perhaps there is a drop in voltage beyond the point of what the rig allows to operate when you're cranking the engine. That's the only thing I can think of.. May check the +12v lead going to the radio with a voltmeter as you're cranking the engine to see how many volts you're getting. Fire that thing up and let us know how it does! That's a nice rig!About the most excitement I've had over the last few days was doing a full reset on the Yaesu, starting programming from a clean slate. I just didn't like how I originally had my memory channels arranged. Whipped out the repeater directory and started programmin'... Wow. I've got all of the local repeaters I could find in there, which took a good 2 hours to put in around 40 freqs and alpha tags. Also keeping track of it all on a spreadsheet. Not having a way to directly input the frequencies does suck, *twist* *twist* *twist* that little knob on top. My wrist was in pain afterwards. lol! Still have to get the frequencies to the north, like around Indy, and out west, where I travel occasionally. Once that's done, time to get anything and everything else in there that I would like to scan through (local police, fire, etc.) I'm programming it the right way this time, so I hopefully won't have to do it again for a long time...Ahh, this is a GREAT hobby! I'm really enjoying the whole Ham thing. I've still talked to only one ham thus far, but it's fun listening. I was suffering from insomnia the other night, so I fired up the scanner and listened in... The the guys on one repeater down here had Echolink going, and were talking with several folks from Washington state - that was neat! I've been scanning for a while but I think that's the first time I've heard Echolink in action. Very cool.

Took a volt meter to the car and it looks like it drops down to 11V when you start the car. I wonder if a bigger battery or a capacitor like you use in car stereos would work..Oh and as expected, the drop is the same wether you check the chassi ground or the battery.

I bet a capacitor will do the trick with your resetting problem, since we have confirmed it's that voltage drop causing it.For the repeater directory, yep, it's from ARRL.http://www.arrl.org/catalog/in...atersHandy to have around! I found several sites which had repeaters listed, but could never hit them, come to find out those weren't listed in the directory! No telling how long those were out of commission. For ten bucks, get yourself a copy!

A bigger battery sounds like a good plan as well.. As we all know, the Vibe's stock battery is pretty crappy. I was checking out the new Kubota tractor my dad just bought, and that thing has a battery that's 200 cca more than my Vibe. lol! I'm planning on ditching that thing this fall, hasn't ever given me any problems, but I figure I'll replace it anyway.A battery with a bit more oomph may help you out especially, since you've added a few gizmos. I'm not sure if the battery alone would eliminate the resetting problems, but it wouldn't hurt. It could very well keep enough juice flowing as you crank the engine to prevent the problem... Don't know!

Whoo hoo, the remounting kits I ordered for the antenna came in today via snail mail. Putty knife in hand, I pried the antenna and base off the glass, cleaned up the residue with nail polish remover, and gave it another shot. Now, I can mount the ground plane hook as it should be. Have I noticed any difference? Uhh, no!

And, last but not least, this is good for a chuckle... Check out my rubber ducky on steroids antenna I bought for the ht. lol Looks so out of place on that tiny thing, but the Diamond is working pretty well.It sure did help clean up reception though! My town sits down in a hole, with the majority of the metro area's FM and TV transmitters on the knobs immediately behind me. Makes radio reception very annyoing, thanks to all the interference. With the Yaesu's original rubber ducky, I was hearing FM broadcast stations many MHz away in either direction from the transmitter's actual frequency. Sometimes multiple stations could be heard on the same frequency. Nothing like hearing an easy listening station where I should be hearing the cops.. Yes, this place is RF hell!I can hit some of the stronger repeaters with some success from inside the house now. I figure if I find a power supply I may have better luck. Considering the $40 one from Radio Shack - puts out 3A, which is 1.5A more than the ht's dc adapter requires. Would that be a good choice? I don't need much.http://www.radioshack.com/prod...2-504

That does look kinda interesting.. a 4:1 ratio of antenna to transiver It doesnt matter thou, as long as it works, right? I started programming the radio and I hit the repeater here in town with no problem.. 100W goes a long way when you are only a few miles away. Maybe a little overkill.. ;-)Getting ready to try to hit repeaters further away and see what kind of luck i have.

If the conditions were just right, you'll be able to carry that signal far with no prob I imagine. Had some hams check into a net over here the other evening that were somewhere to the south of you, the repeater is south of Louisville.Yeah, 100 watts may be a bit overkill. lol! What power levels does that thing have? BTW, if you want me to look up any frequencies before you get your directory, let me know and I'll post them for you.73's!

That repeater is on 146.7 (KY4KY) Maybe a stretch to hit it normally from you're neck of the woods, but I bet you could if the propigation was favorable for 2 meters like it was the other evening.Have fun with the rig!

funny thing happened today.. i was working on getting my TH-D7AG to talk to my gps so that i can do aprs.Well when i finally got it to work when the first aprs transmision was sent it killed my power supply on my computer. One of the fans in the ps had been going bad so it was on its way out anyways, but it was just a surprise that when the tx light came on the computer died. It also makes a buzzing sound in the speakers when it transmits at 5Watt a foot away from them

You sent that power supply over the edge... The Yaesu also gives a bit of a buzz in the speakers, but not much. The more interesting part is how the monitor gets real bright if I key up around it. lol
