Wondering if anyone has ever done a 4,000+ mile trip on a 130,000+ mile 2000’s vibe. It was my mom’s car and she says it won’t survive the trip. I’m skilled with vehicles and able to do my own repairs.
I have taken my 2007 FWD with 110,000 miles out west for a camping/hiking trip which was just shy of 3,000 miles round trip. I didn't have any issues with the VIbe handling being fully loaded with equipment or handling uphill/downhill, cool mornings and high temp days (100F+). The main thing was that before the trip I ensured that I took care of all the maintenance so I didn't have to worry about it anything being overdue during the trip. I also took the car on a weekend 300 mile shake out/road ready test to ensure I wouldn't run into anything major while I was on the real trip. So in summary, the Vibe can definately handle the trip with no problems as long as there is not some existing maintenance issue.
Also, I just either slept outside or in the back with the seats folded down but there are some very cool roof rack tents that I have seen people use! Again, alot of options with the versatile Vibe.
Can't say from here if the car will make the trip. Statistically speaking, a vibe with only 130K miles should be good for double that. However, it depends a lot on how its been treated. As a minimum, check the condition of the brakes and tires. Fluid changes would be a good idea too. Unless there's some other issue with it. Do you know why she doesn't trust it?
My 2007 FWD Vibe constantly makes cross-country trips, even with 220,000 miles on the clock now. I've never had a problem on the road. I've replaced one wheel bearing and all shocks, replaced brake parts, kept good tires on it, and kept up on engine and transmission maintenance. Mom may be more concerned about you than the car.
