I was wrong range dot is not lit. is the gear display side panel supposed to Be dark at night?

yes , I am sure the light is on during the day. and not at night. I drive with instrument lights set to highest setting It keeps me awake! I also turn my headlights on when I drive. It seems that the shift indicator light is on even before I start the car!any help much appreciated.
