Think there was a typo in there "valve pan gaskets" aren't a thing, will either be oil pan or valve cover.... a ruined head gasket was most likely a result of overheating, without looking at it cant really help, take it to another shop for a second opinion, just tell them its overheating, ...

Might be late to the party but the rod bolt seems to say a lot, looks similar to a nail pulled out of a board with the claw of a hammer (replace the claw of the hammer with the rod end) that crank has tons of leverage i would guess there is a connecting rod with the threads pulled right out of it.
side note on the first post, on these engines the timing chain tensioner is spring loaded and has a pawl that wont let it back off once its extended without removing it. As far as engine swapping, this little four cyl shouldn't give you too much of a fight. Disconnect all your electrical connections...
