Re: The axle enigma

Got my left axle changed. Quite simple to swap. And the base model 5 spd axle works just fine. It fixed several noise issues I'm having, but there still is a mystery clunk when I'm driving. Thinking it's either a loose engine mount or possibly the right axle may be bad also.

Re: The axle enigma

And yes the axles were welded (really stuck) when I pulled the gearbox for my engine install. I used my trusty 3lb hammer and a chisel on the flat of the cv. A few good smacks and they popped right out. An old junk yard trick of mine.

Re: The axle enigma

We have had the vibe for a while now. Just drove it for real Sunday. I've had manual trans cars most of my days, and this is my 1st 6 speed. Gotta say it takes a lot of courage to go for the 6th gear (sposed to be reverse lol). I'll even fess up I clashed the metro this am going for 6th. I'm not sol...

The axle enigma

Just getting around to getting our new (old) 03 vibe going. Finally found a good engine locally and on the test drive I noticed it clicks and shimmys like a bad cv axle. And the driver side axle outer boot is blown. Now for the enigma. Someone before me installed a 6spd trans. It's a base model vibe...

Re: Figuring out some issues

Yeah it's sad to see someone wreck a 1000 dollar motor for nothing. I just can't seem to find a value priced motor for one of these. Dang seriously the best price I've found so far is $650. And I'm not sure of the quality of that motor. Looks like this is gonna sit for a while. One of these days I'l...

Re: 03 vibe parts

Kind of interested in an engine. Is this close to northwest ohio? I would rather pick it up in person. And how much?

Re: Figuring out some issues

Figured out what exactly happened to this sad poor vibe. I'm guessing that the previous owner bought this vibe wrecked with a clean title. And he only put in a radiator (no fan) and ignored the size able dent in the oil pan. Which smashed the pick up tube against the pan. Which starved the motor for...

Re: Figuring out some issues

This is beyond a light tick or small noise. This is a "(removed) the engine is gonna fly apart" noise. And I took the belt off and ran it before I took it apart. No difference in noise. This has to be a metal tap or tick. I struck out at the pnp today. So I'm gonna tear into this some more...

Figuring out some issues

New member new owner figuring out some issues on my 03 vibe base. So far I've figured out that somewhere in its 204k miles someone swapped in a 6 speed gear box. It has lkq wrote on the trans. It has the original engine. Vin tag matches car. The previous owner either bought it wrecked or wrecked it ...

Re: New owner In Ohio

Yes I think someone has done some creative swapping in the past. I haven't driven it yet, but I'm sure it is a 6 speed. Reverse is all way to the left and up. And I'm almost certain it is a 1zz. The plastic cover says vvti and I have had the valve cover off already. The cams ride directly on the lif...

New owner In Ohio

Vibe newbie in Ohio. We are the proud owners of a 03 vibe. Best I can gather is its a 1zz base model with a 6 speed manual front wheel drive. Got it for a bargain because it has a terrible sound coming from the right topside of the engine. Sounds like a bad timing set or a bad lifter. It rattles ter...
