Changing headlight bulbs on '09 Vibe?

Post by Melophile »

I need to change the low beam headlight bulbs on my '09 Vibe, but I have no clue how I'm supposed to get to the sockets.

Passenger side (washer fluid thing blocks me from getting to the bulb):

Driver side (random tubing [highlighted in green] blocks me from getting to the bulb):

According to the service manual you have to take the whole headlight assembly out.

Remove bumper, remove headlights.

Should be easy enough. Likely one bolt in each wheel well holding the bumper on the sides...likely behind the mud guard. A few bolt and/or clips on the top under the hood and it'll pull away with a tug. Then likely 3 bolt holding the headlight in place.

It's a tight fit, but you should be able to change the bulbs without removing the headlight housings and/or bumper cover. I have changed mine numerous times and it seems like the more you remove and re-install the bulbs, the easier it gets.

One piece of advice I can give you for the driver's side is to pop the retainer out of the top of the black plastic piece that holds the tubing going to the air intake box. You will than be able to move the tubing out of the way which gives you quite a bit more room to get to the low beam bulb on the driver's side.

Remove the black pipe and slide the battery to the side to get at the drivers bulb, passenger side is easier. Both require a 30 degree turn to the left (I recall) and the bulb comes out. I did this twice during my ownership.

^This.

It's definitely a tight fit. I just turned the bulb base and pulled it out carefully. There were a couple times I brushed the bulb against the housing, but if you're super careful it will not damage the bulb.

Good luck!
