CEL trifecta - P0441, P0442, P0446

Post by DeClerq »

CEL came on this morning and these were the codes I got. After several minutes of thorough research, I have concluded it's either a loose gas cap (doubtful) or a bad evap canister, or any number of other possibilities. Hope it's not the canister. Cheapest I found was from Rockauto ($254). Did find a used one for a Matrix on ebay for $150 (+ $22 for shipping, wth? Thing probably only weighs 2 pounds). I'll do some poking around after work. Car's an '04 base, only 67k miles, no engine mods.

Hopefully, this will save you a lot of trouble. These three codes can indicate a plastic vapor hose with a pinhole leak, as happened to my 2005 AWD.My dealer (under GM extended warranty) replaced the canister, solenoids, and (finally) the hose before the CEL would stay off.Don't have the part number handy, but it was a long, corrugated hose about 1" in diameter. I think it runs from the canister to the engine and should be visible under the car.Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, I'll take a look. I did erase the codes prior to leaving work and CEL did not come back on during the drive home. Granted it was only about a 10 mile drive. I'll just play the waiting game now and see if it comes back on before doing anything drastic.

Surprisingly they have stayed off. All I did other than reset the codes was take off and screw back on the gas cap. So maybe it was as simple as a loose cap.

Looked down on the way home and had the CEL staring at me. I immediately scanned with the ScanGauge, P0442. Got home and checked the gas cap, it was on tight (last fuelup was 250 miles ago.)

I cleared it and will keep an eye on the OBD readiness, will see if it comes back... 11 year old car, 88k on the clock. I'll add it to the list of everything else that currently needs attention.

Colonel,

Have you ever replaced the gas cap?

They do fail from time to time...

I have not, but that's first on the list if the CEL comes back. Or I might just replace it for good measure anyway. The cap's tether has been a pain in the (removed) for a while now as it keeps falling off, so it needs to be replaced for that if not anything else. I'll be heading to the dealer for some Toyota Red coolant and T-IV, might as well add the cap to the shopping list.

I drove the car about 20 miles today, no CEL so far. It went from 4 readiness monitors not ready down to 1, I'll keep an eye on it to see if it goes back to ready status.
