Adventures in installation: featuring, a power window & lock upgrade

Post by viciousSquirrel »

Hi, I'm new here, but I thought I start out with a bang. Seeing as everyone shuts down the idea of putting power locks and windows into a base vibe I thought I would do it (the factory stuff). I didn't really know where to put this so.....On with the show.Well, I bought some power window and Lock motors for the Vibe for my mom's car as a Christmas gift. Being spring break and all, I finally found a few minutes to get on this project. SO...I am going to throw out what and how I have started, and maybe you guys can throw out some info or whatnot and together we can get this project done, and create a pretty good how to for the board. This is a work in progress at the moment, I would really love some help reading the wiring diagrams. And any POSITIVE comments or constructive criticism is welcome. On to the great power window and lock install...First and foremost lets get the the reasons you may not want to try this at home out of the way. 1.) Problem - ALL of the wiring harness are different. Solution - The harness's are pretty easy to replace, or at least the ones in the doors certainly are.2.) Problem - The parts are difficult to find. Solution - The easiest way to do this is to find a parts car in a junkyard near you. And remember that the corolla parts from the same years will work as well. Also, the internet is your friend, DON'T be afraid to use it.3.) Problem - Expense - It's expensive! Solution - try to find the parts all together, as opposed to piece mailing it. I have only spent 225 bucks on all the motors for the locks and windows as well as the wiring harness's for the doors.4.) Problem - You're not the wiring kind of guy, or your just not that much of a car guy. Solution - Most everything is plug and play and it's all pretty simple, besides you have to start somewhere!5.) Problem - This looks time consuming and I don't have second car. Solution - Join the club. Work fast, have a friend and don't bite off more than you can chew in a day.So, A couple of tips #1 YOU WILL NEED A HAND! when you remove// install the window motors you will need someone to hold the glass, NO EXCEPTIONS.Before you begin, get a beer, it will ease the tension. I never condone working on a car completely sober...the stress will get to you.Step 1 remove the door panels.Remove the window crank... there is a small C-clip that can be popped off with a flat head...BE gentle! you don't want to slip and gouge your door panelRemove the screw behind the door handle, it is hidden underneath a small flap that can be popped open with a small flathead.Remove the screw in the middle of the door pull pocket. The door panel just pulls straight off at this point, pull gently and the plastic pops will release with a loud pop.Once the door panels are removed you will see this.Next remove the door handleThen unplug the speaker. Remove the 2 door handle pull screws with a 10 mil. socket and socket qwrench, I used a long extention and it was a good plan I must say Now SLOWLY begin to peel back the plastic. I highly recommend some kind of cheap disposable gloves for this part, as the goop on the door//plastic will never come out of your cloths and it will stick to hands spreading to every imaginable surface thereafter!Set the plastic aside with the glue faced up somewhere where it wont blow around and stick to itself, or something else.Leaving you with this...Remove the black plates with a phillips head #2 Screwdriver. Always put the screws back where you took them out, this willl keep you from losing things or mixing up the screws. You are left with this..Giving you plenty of room to work on taking out the locks.Step 2 remove the locks. For starters you need to pop the grommet off that is on the doorjamb area of the door....as such. the picture sucks but the bronze thing in the hole is a Torx screw that holds on the outer door lock. When you remove this screw the door lock that you actually would put the key on can be removed, pull and wiggle it gently and it will come free of the door and the inner lock mechanism.Once it is out you will notice that it has a plush shaped end that fits neatly into the lock mechanism. Make note of this when putting it back in. it works like so...A quick shot of a power and non - power lockIntermediate step...get a beer.Step 3 remove the wiring harness.Just pinch the clips and they should slide out with some difficultyStep 4, remove the window motors.Remove the glass, there are only 2 10mil screws holding the door glass in.Looking at the non power window mechanism you will notice it only has 4 screws in the door and two screws holding in the glass. The power motor will require 2 more bolts installed. The motors sit in the doors like so...Notice the x shaped mounting pattern on the bolts. you can see the rest of the mounting procedure by looking at my shots of the white door from the donor Corolla.Intermediate step... get another beer.Step 5 install the locks.A quick shot of a front and back door motor.Make sure when you put the motor in that you align the fork hanging off the door handle in the back doors with the rod sticking of the back of the lock assembly. If the plastic fork is not stradeling the metal rod coming out the back of the lock YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. Also, don't forget to line up the child safety lock switch. For the front doors, there is a metal rod with hanging straight down from the door handle. Insert this into the hole on the back of the power front lock mechanism. If you do not, the door will not open.Step 6 install the window motors. Step 7 Remove the Kick panelsYou need to pull these so you can get to the access hole that leads to the door. Once removed you can pull the end of the drivers side wiring harness through.you will see this. you will also find that your new door wiring harness plugs don't mesh with these dash wiring harness plugs that you have.Step 8 install the wiring harness. This is a picture (from the donor Corolla) showing the proper routing of the Door wiring harness. though at this point it is fairly self explanatory.Back door...And here's a shot of the front.Optional step - Have your buddy that was holding the window for you get you both, a beer. The above took me a day, I'm reasonably
experienced with cars but this was my first time taking apart a Matrix. I am by no means a mechanic.Step 9 Remove the dash.I also re-pinned the wiring harness to accept the power mirror and speaker wires from the new door harness to the old dash harness on the driver side. I used splices to connect the same component wires on the passenger side. This is as far as I have gotten as of today, I will try to add some more pics here and there and elaborate where necessary later I'm TIRED!A few more Pics...door lock removalWindow motor diagramDash wiring...System DiagramWiring Diagram

Very nice! Now would be a good time to put a sound deadner on the doors too though.

Bought some door caps today to cover the holes left over from the window cranks. Here is a link for those that care.http://www.a1electric.com/Merc..._Code=I am also going out to the junkyard either tom or Friday thus I will take some more shots and yank the dash harness out of the donor corolla. If anyone wants me to post some pics of that let me know and i can integrate the dash removal of the corolla and the vibe in this thread. -Shaun

Well, I went & took the dash harness, and most of the body wiring harness out of the corolla from the boneyard today. I didn't take any pics of the dash removal as I was in a hurry to get done before dark, and no one seemed too interested in the dash removal. But I can say this...What a PAIN IN THE A$$. All told it took about an hour and a half for me and a buddy to pull everything out, and put the remains back together.for those that do care about donar car dash removal....Tips for corolla dash removal, Take the A-pillars out first. Then the vents just pop out with a small flatheadAfter that pull the radio trim piece out, it likes to stick in there but a firm hand will break it free, it's very pliable and had some protrusions into the the upper dash to hold it in place but nothing resembling a clip.next there are two 10mm screws under the radio, remove those bad boys.pull the radio out.pull the center of the 3 HVAC knobs off and remove the screw.pry lightly up on the crappy fake wood trim that surrounds the shifter and it will pop right off.pry the bottom of the center stacks crappy fake wood trim and the bottom will release with a firm pop.unplug the HVAC contols and the cig. lighter ect. remove and set aside. pull off glovegoxremove the steering column surround with a single screw on the bottom and two screws on either side. (you must turn the steering wheel to reveal the screws)remove the kick panels, and remove the two 10mm screws holding the bottom of the dash on.pry lightly on the gauge bezel surround, it will pop right out. remove the gauges by taking out the single screw in the top center and then releasing the clips on the bottom by pushing the tab toward the front of the car.once the gauges are loose, remove the plugs at the top and pull the gauges free of the dash.the last and hardest screw attaches the passenger airbag to the dash its a 10mm and requires some contortion to get to.finally lift up at the front of the dash and pull away from the windshield. viola you have removed the upper dash! Which was it took for us to get the harness out.Might i suggest that you bring a roll of masking tape and a sharpie so that when you start unplugging things you can find what they are and where they came from through the art of labeling. Damn, I wish i hadn't forgotten the tape Tom. = fun with wiring up the newly installed motors.

well, I got the power windows working and one of the power locks....hmmm perhaps I should have used the proper size splices...anyhow I have come down with strep and don't have the initiative at the moment to go finishing the writeup. That said, having a wiring harness from the donor car proved to be mostly useless and I would recommend essentially making your own. It would be considerably easier to do that I think. Although it was nice to have the plug heads to stat with, that made life much easier, especially with the integration relay.also to add to the must have pile..you will need the integration relay a 30a fuse and a P/W relay, all of which will work fine with the fusebox currently in your car.

Well, I FINALLY got a few minutes and got everything working today. And by found some time I mean wasted yet another 9 hours of my life troubleshooting the power locks. At any rate i was being rained on, intermittently so i didn't get any pics. However i now have an airbag light on so i don't know what in the hell I did but if anyone has any ideas shoot them my way. Also, this has sapped some 50 hours of my life...mostly in taking the dash and associated parts out to wire things, then putting it all back in to drive home before the nights end. Thus once I get it completely trouble shot I was wondering if enough people were interested in having someone make a few plug n' play harnesses. I basically had to create a whole separate harness to connect everything to the non-power cars harness. it was a GIGANTIC pain in the (removed) but that said, if I can do it, anyone can.So for now if anyone is planning on tackling this project, let me know and I'll share whatever is not in this thread in the interim. -Shaun

UpdateThe locks weren't getting enough juice so I ditched the splices and soldered the wires instead. They all work like a champ, as do the windows!I got a PM today asking about the integration relay. You only use about half the wires in the integration relay. the rest can be capped and taped up out of the way. The integration relay diagrams can be found in the vibe manual available for download through this site. Just look under DOOR LOCK CONTROL in the wiring diagrams section. There are several color diagrams, however the global diagram that shows the junction boxes and whatnot also has a black and white diagram that is pretty useful. Before you get into the integration relay, be sure to look at the diagram of junction boxes in the car. there are two that concern this install and they basically connect all the powers and grounds from the door locks or the windows depending on the junction box. I avoided the junction box entirely by just splicing the wires together which DID NOT WORK. I used the wrong size splices and couldn't get enough juice. therefore I recommend soldering the wires together to avoid using the junction box. -Shaun

This is a great tutorial, one thing though, you might want to upload all the pics to here, yeah I know, difficult and time consuming, but should you have an issue with your Photobucket, it wouldn't effect the tutorial..

Can I buy that blue plastic that goes over the door? I ripped mine off and it doesn't want to stick back on. Anyone know what the black sticky stuff is?

I also have a base 05 Vibe and would like to put power door locks and windows. The above tutorial is awesome but a bit intimidating - specially the wiring part...I did some googling on aftermarket power doors/windows and found Autoloc - any one looked into this? http://www.thehoffmangroup.com...locksLooking at their instructional video the installation is a little bit different from yours (there's a lot they left out of the video and it's not on a vibe)..Just looking for some thoughts on this? If this is not good, any other after market power door/windows system I should look into?
