Computer guy asking for computer help. It's a tough one.

OK, I just got a laptop from work. I have a network logon to the laptop for when I am at work and a local logon to the laptop for when I am at home. I have a home network and want to use my resources (printer, shared drives) on my laptop. However, I cannot change my computer to just use my workgroup without completely switching it away from my work domain. Is there a way to have my local account use a workgroup and my work account to use the domain without having to constantly switch it when I get home and then switch it back when I get to work??

Can you set your home network up so that it mimics the work network, thus eliminating the need for changing the workgroup and such at all? That would be my only suggestion...I'm sure you know a lot more about it than I do. Heh.

Is it windows or mac, or some combination?I have a similar thing, all Windows, and sometimes can't see things I know are on the network, and usually have better luck finding other computers by right clicking on "my netowrk places" (XP) and then search for computers using IP address of what I know is out there.Have both work and home using DHCP, so that helps. Before I used DHCP, had different static IPs at home and work, and made a couple of short batch files to configure between networks.a batch file like thisQuote »netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" static 10.10.10.111 255.255.255.0 10.10.10.1 1netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection" static 192.168.0.1will set you up for IP address 10.10.10.111, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 through default gateway of 10.10.10.1 with a DNS of 192.168.0.1

I have a Windows-Mac network set up at my parents' house, and it's impossible to get both sides to recognize each other all the time. The printer sharing doesn't work because the printer has no Mac drivers, and I can see the PC from my Mac, but not the other way around. (But you can log into the Mac from the PC through the IP.) The printer would work if there were drivers -- it acts like it's sending it, but will sit and do that alllllllll day long. All-Mac networks are so easy. Hook up the cable and they're happy.

My network is all Windows XP. I should try mapping through IP. I know it will work for the printer, and come to think of it, it should come through on the folders too. HMMMM lemme try that.

AHA there it goes. I was just trying to do it the difficult way. I feel dumb now. DUH. Thanks for the suggestions.By the way, all I did was map per IP not UNC name. I am loving this wireless networking stuff. So much better than running a cord off of the router. AND I will soon be connecting XBOX live to a wireless access point so I don't have to run another wire. I love being a geek.

Computers are evil... Problems that appear to be complex are solved by what seem to be the stupidest means. Been there a lot myself with this Linux stuff.. Oh, so that's all I needed to do?
